Crysis 3 is a sci-fi first-person shooter video game developed by the German company Crytek and published by Electronic Arts. Continuation of the Crysis series of games. Crysis 3 continues the Prophet storyline. The action takes place in 2047, the scene is similar to the second part - New York. 24 years have passed since the events of the second part. The city was covered with a special “nano-dome”, which was divided into seven tszzzztszrayons, called the “Seven Wonders”. Through the fault of mystical energy, the city turned into a jungle. Under the dome is a quarantine zone, which is inhabited by the remnants of the alien forces.

Crytek is trying to combine the best elements of the first two parts in the gameplay of Crysis 3 - which is why the action still takes place in New York, part of which, however, has turned into a jungle. The developers promise maximum non-linearity - a mission to destroy the dam was demonstrated at the E3 exhibition. At the same time, you can go to the dam by three routes, and on each, different styles of passage are possible.


In this subsection of our review, the main graphical aspects of this game are revealed. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphics settings and the quality of the development of the main visual aspects.

Supported OS and graphics API

Crysis 3 MP Open Beta is supported by major Windows operating systems, which include Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Other operating systems are not currently supported by developers. 


The priority and main graphics API for the Crysis 3 MP Open Beta multiplayer game is DirectX 11. The game is distributed through the digital game sale service Origin.

Game engine 

Crysis 3 BETA  is based on CryEngine 3, a game engine developed by the German company Crytek and which is the successor to the CryEngine 2 engine. CryEngine 3 is originally a cross-platform engine - it is initially focused on IBM PC-compatible computers and game consoles Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 , as well as their subsequent versions. In addition, the engine is focused on the development of massively multiplayer online games. The CryEngine 3 engine is completely commercial, and the main emphasis in its development is its licensing by other companies.


CryEngine 3 was officially announced on March 11, 2009, and on October 14, 2009 the official release of the engine took place. The first game to be announced to use CryEngine 3 is Crytek's first-person shooter Crysis 2. At the end of March 2010, in an interview with GameReactor magazine, Cevat Yerli said that the developers from Crytek had to face a number of problems when developing CryEngine 3 for consoles: “The most difficult process was the process of scaling CryEngine 3 for consoles while maintaining image quality and the proper level of performance. Of course, there were problems, but we are very proud that our team managed to overcome them.”

Shaders in CryEngine 3 are written once in a high-level programming language, and then automatically compiled for each platform. Shader output is optimized through artist settings and for the 3D environment in which the shader will be used. Thanks to this, it becomes possible to create such effects as: “invisibility effect”, wet, dirty and frozen surfaces, which can be “layered” one on top of the other and combined with other shaders that simulate effects such as metal, glass and others.

CryEngine 3 supports per-pixel real-time lighting, reflections, refractions, volumetric heat effects and animated textures to simulate windows, bullet holes, sun glare surfaces and many other effects. CryEngine 3 shaders use the unified shader architecture that has been available since Direct3D 10.

"Übershader" is a single shader program with many features: one to four lights, light types, specular cubemaps, fog, detailed textures, normal maps, specular textures, and more. Millions of Übershader combinations can be generated. Übershader uses dynamic branching, splitting into multiple passes, reducing combinations, and accepting options with less functionality and lower performance requirements. Uses asynchronous shader compilation and a distributed job system to compile the shader cache.

Advanced game settings

Crysis 3 MP Open Beta has almost the same settings that we saw in the alpha version. A pleasant surprise was that now a huge number of anti-aliasing modes are available in the settings. We can flexibly manipulate both basic and advanced all graphic settings, exposing them to low, medium, high and maximum quality levels.

As we can see, the picture difference between different graphics settings is quite controversial. Only upon closer inspection can you notice a significant difference.

FXAA is not applied when activated, neither on NVIDIA cards, nor on AMD. And if you play on it and get a pretty high FPS, don't get your hopes up - you're playing without anti-aliasing. And as we can see, the most attractive anti-aliasing mode is the MSAA mode, on which we conducted our testing...

General visual design and game physics

As we already pointed out about the review of the alpha version of Crysis 3 - to a greater extent, the game is an almost complete copy of Crysis 2, both in design and visual style. The main menu has hardly changed, visually the game looks almost the same as the last part, although some progress is noticeable.

Frankly, such a small number of graphical changes in such a long-awaited project is somewhat disappointing. Everyone expected something new, something completely different. The game fully pulls on the addon to the second part, than on an independent project. But maybe we are wrong, and something completely unexpected awaits us in the full version...

GPU test

All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality by MSI Afterburner . The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. The average FPS was taken as the performance indicator. The test of video cards was carried out on an empty map, since it turned out to be simply impossible to test such a number of video cards and resolutions with the presence of players. Below is a video of the test segment:   

Our video cards were tested at resolutions of 1680x1050, 1920x1080 and 2560x1600 at high and maximum graphics quality settings allowed by Crysis 3 BETA. Multi-chip configurations from NVIDIA and AMD, in contrast to the alpha version, this time showed an increase in performance, although AMD's scalability is much lower.

NVIDIA added support for SLI in Crysis 3, but the only problem is in its full version... For normal SLI operation, use the GeForce SLI Profile Tool to change the path in the profile from Crysis 3.exe to Crysis 3 MP Open Beta.exe.

At a resolution of 2560x1600 at maximum settings, the minimum and optimal minimum FPS was shown by a GEFORCE GTX 690-level video card. Other top-end video cards are also able to cope with the game, but with uncomfortable drawdowns. Cards with less than 1536 megabytes of video memory are completely unplayable with these settings.

As we can see, with today's AMD update in the form of Catalyst 13.2 beta 4 drivers, Radeon graphics cards were able to show adequate performance, so if you want to play Crysis 3 MP Open Beta, then we advise you to use this particular driver revision. Now let's look at the gain in performance at a resolution of 1920x1080 at maximum quality settings - the results obtained earlier with Catalyst 13.2 beta 3 were taken as 100% :

As we can see, the 5xxx series received the largest increase, but to tell the truth, due to its low productivity, there was no big effect. The 6xxx series received a 17% increase, which fully affected the performance of the Radeon HD 6970. And finally, the 7xxx series received a 14% increase, which allowed most of its video cards to show decent results.

Testing of the video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the  MSI Afterburner program. The results on top video cards from AMD and NVIDIA at resolutions of  1680x1050, 1920x1080 and 2560x1600 were taken as the indicator.

The recommended amount of video memory for this game is about 1.5 GB for basic graphics quality settings. For ultra resolutions and maximum settings, you will need about two gigabytes of video memory.

We tested processor dependence on 12 models of basic configurations that are relevant today. The test was carried out in those places where the value of the video card for the game is minimal and its load was less than 99%, this time at a resolution of 1920x1080 with maximum graphics quality settings.

Crysis 3 MP Open Beta has a very strong impact on system CPU dependency. For a comfortable game, you will need at least four cores installed in your PC.

RAM test


Testing of the RAM consumed by the game was carried out by monitoring directly through the Windows Task Manager. The test was conducted on the base configuration Core i 7 3930K@4.8 GHz with 8GB DDR3 2400 MGz pre-installed memory.

As we can see, with various basic quality settings, the amount of RAM consumed in Crysis 3 BETA  is at the same level of 1200 megabytes. Thus, for a comfortable game, you must have at least 2  GB of RAM installed in your PC. The optimal will be the presence of 3 gigabytes.
