Crysis 3 is a sci-fi first-person shooter video game developed by the German company Crytek and published by Electronic Arts. Continuation of the Crysis series of games. Crysis 3 continues the Prophet storyline. The action takes place in 2047, the scene is similar to the second part - New York. 24 years have passed since the events of the second part. The city was covered with a special "nano-dome", which was divided into seven districts, called the "Seven Wonders". Through the fault of mystical energy, the city turned into a jungle. Under the dome is a quarantine zone, which is inhabited by the remnants of the alien forces.

 Crytek is trying to combine the best elements of the first two parts in the gameplay of Crysis 3 - which is why the action still takes place in New York, part of which, however, has turned into a jungle. The developers promise maximum non-linearity - a mission to destroy the dam was demonstrated at the E3 exhibition. At the same time, you can go to the dam by three routes, and on each, different styles of passage are possible. 

THE GRAFICAL PART

In this subsection of our review, the main graphical aspects of this game are revealed. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphics settings and the quality of the development of the main visual aspects.

Supported OS and graphics API

Crysis 3 is supported by major Windows operating systems, which include Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Other operating systems are not currently supported by developers.

The primary and primary graphics API for Crysis 3's multiplayer game is DirectX 11. The game is distributed through Origin's digital game sales service.

Game engine 

Crysis 3 is based on CryEngine 3, a game engine developed by the German company Crytek and which is the successor to the CryEngine 2 engine. CryEngine 3 is originally a cross-platform engine - it was initially focused on IBM PC-compatible computers and game consoles Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3, as well as their subsequent versions. In addition, the engine is focused on the development of massively multiplayer online games. The CryEngine 3 engine is completely commercial, and the main emphasis in its development is its licensing by other companies.

CryEngine 3 was officially announced on March 11, 2009, and on October 14, 2009 the official release of the engine took place. The first game to be announced to use CryEngine 3 is Crytek's first-person shooter Crysis 2. At the end of March 2010, in an interview with GameReactor magazine, Cevat Yerli said that the developers from Crytek had to face a number of problems when developing CryEngine 3 for consoles: “The most difficult process was the process of scaling CryEngine 3 for consoles while maintaining image quality and the proper level of performance. Of course, there were problems, but we are very proud that our team managed to overcome them.”

Shaders in CryEngine 3 are written once in a high-level programming language, and then automatically compiled for each platform. Shader output is optimized through artist settings and for the 3D environment in which the shader will be used. Thanks to this, it becomes possible to create such effects as: “invisibility effect”, wet, dirty and frozen surfaces, which can be “layered” one on top of the other and combined with other shaders that simulate effects such as metal, glass and others.

CryEngine 3 supports per-pixel real-time lighting, reflections, refractions, volumetric heat effects and animated textures to simulate windows, bullet holes, sun glare surfaces and many other effects. CryEngine 3 shaders use the unified shader architecture that has been available since Direct3D 10.

"Ubershader" is a single shader program with many features: one to four lights, light types, specular cubemaps, fog, detailed textures, normal maps, specular textures, and more. Millions of Ubershader combinations can be generated. Ubershader uses dynamic branching, splitting into multiple passes, reducing combinations, and accepting options with less functionality and lower performance requirements. Uses asynchronous shader compilation and a distributed job system to compile the shader cache.

 Crysis 3 has pretty much the same settings that we saw in the beta version. We can flexibly manipulate both basic and advanced all graphic settings, exposing them to low, medium, high and maximum quality levels.

As we can see, the picture difference between different graphics settings is quite significant. Only at maximum settings we get the best picture.

FXAA, as expected, is not applied when it is enabled, neither on NVIDIA cards, nor on AMD. And if you're playing on it and getting pretty high FPS, don't get your hopes up - you're playing without anti-aliasing... The best mode is SMAA, as there is no difference between different anti-aliasing and it has the least performance pressure.

General visual design and game physics

Crysis 3 surprised us a lot and made us rehabilitate Crytek in our eyes as a leading developer of computer game graphics. We have made tremendous progress regarding the second part, and we are faced not with a console porting product, but with a very modern and technologically advanced project.

The game uses a lot of graphical effects and visual bells and whistles - the detail of the surrounding world is simply amazing, the animation is excellent, and the explosions are just like no other, it has really become very realistic to play this miracle of the gaming industry.

But again, not without a fly in the ointment - the levels, as in the second part, are still linear, and although we are given a wide tactical choice, there is still a feeling of a corridor shooter. AI also deserves special attention, which has not wised up at all ...

 All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality by MSI Afterburner . The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. The average and minimum FPS were taken as the performance indicator. Below is a video of the test segment:  

Our video cards were tested at resolutions of 1920x1080 and 2560x1600 at the maximum graphics quality settings allowed by Crysis 3. The tests were carried out with various anti-aliasing modes. Multi-chip configurations from NVIDIA and AMD showed a good increase in performance, which indicates perfect driver preparation.

Testing of the video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the  MSI Afterburner program. The results on top video cards from AMD and NVIDIA were taken as an indicator at resolutions of  1920x1080 and 2560x1600 with various anti-aliasing settings.

The recommended amount of video memory for this game is about 1.5 GB for basic graphics quality settings. For ultra resolutions and maximum settings, you will need about two gigabytes of video memory.

We tested processor dependence on 19 models of basic configurations that are relevant today. The test was carried out in those places where the value of the video card for the game is minimal and its load was less than 99%, this time at a resolution of 1920x1080 with maximum graphics quality settings. We've added a new item - CPU Core Loading, where you can find out how effectively games use multi-cores.

Crysis 3 has a very strong impact on CPU dependency. For a comfortable game, you will need at least four cores installed in your PC. With two cores in the game, there is practically nothing to do. This time, AMD processors showed very decent results and are the best choice in Crysis 3 in terms of price / quality ratio...

AMD has very good multi-core efficiency, which is significantly higher than that of Intel processors. This explains the very good results of its processors relative to the opponent.

Testing of the RAM consumed by the game was carried out by monitoring directly through the Windows Task Manager. The test was conducted on the base configuration Core i 7 3930K@4.8 GHz with 8GB DDR3 2400 MGz pre-installed memory.

As we can see, with various basic quality settings, the amount of RAM consumed in Crysis 3 is at the same level of 1200 megabytes. Thus, for a comfortable game, you must have at least 2  GB of RAM installed in your PC. The optimal will be the presence of 3 gigabytes.

So, we see that for comfortable playability in Crysis 3, we need a very powerful configuration, which should consist of at least a mid-range video card and a processor that has at least four cores. To fully immerse yourself in the gameplay, you will need no more, no less, and a top-end video card and processor with no less than six computing threads. So an upgrade is inevitable for most users...
