FINAL FANTASY XV is an action RPG and the fifteenth issue of the cult FINAL FANTASY series. The events of the game take place in a world where reality coexists with fantasy. Together with Crown Prince Noctis and his comrades, players will go on an epic journey. Friendship, love, despair - a lot awaits the heroes on this path. They have to learn the fate of Noctis and fight the formidable empire of Niflheim.

In this subsection of our review, the main graphical aspects of this game are revealed. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphics settings and the quality of the development of the main visual aspects.

GAME ENGINE

FINAL FANTASY XV is based on the Luminous Engine, which is being developed internally by the Japanese company Square Enix as a promising tool for creating games in the future. "Luminous Engine" should significantly increase the efficiency and speed of computer game development and replace most of the predecessor engines in use by Square Enix. "Luminous Studio" is designed and developed as a full-fledged and full-featured complex tool for developing games for different platforms and in different genres, which should combine high efficiency and quality. The main "pillars" on which the engine is created are cross-platform, wide functionality, modularity and scalability.

Luminous Engine

Luminous Studio supports many features for editing and processing game content and assets: visual editing, real-time editing, collaborative parallel editing, automatic assembly and testing of objects, asset management system, task management, and so on. The graphics engine used in the PC version of Luminous Studio has native support for Direct3D 11, including tessellation. In addition, many other technologies are supported, including various ones, including diffuse, real-time reflections, refraction and ray distortion. It is stated that the graphics engine will stand out with "strikingly realistic visual fidelity".

The Luminous Studio development team pays great attention to character animation. They believe that animation is one of the most important components of creating photorealistic graphics, and unnatural animation stands out and breaks photorealism. Particular attention is paid to procedural animation, in particular, methods such as inverse kinematics for the whole body, etc.

Luminous Studio will use a combination of pre-recorded motion capture animation along with procedurally generated animation. A special database contains many pre-recorded animations for many movements and actions (for example, walking or swinging a sword). When creating a character animation, the most relevant animation entries are retrieved from the database and adjusted based on the character's current conditions and/or environment. The developers gave several examples, the first one describes the overlay of a procedural approach on the recorded walking animation in the case when the character is walking on an uneven surface. In the following example, the animation engine can change the pre-recorded sword swing animation depending on how heavy it is,

The physics engine included with Luminous Studio supports the simulation of tissues and fluids.

Quality settings were analyzed by us back in the demo , and an extended analysis of all graphic settings will also be released as a separate material in the future. 

GENERAL VISUAL DESIGN AND GAME PHYSICS

The graphics in FINAL FANTASY XV are very beautiful and technologically advanced, but sometimes flaws also slip through. It is also worth noting a very mediocre game menu and interface, which are typical for rather outdated games.

All video cards were tested at the maximum graphics quality by the Action! program. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. Below is a video of the test segment :  

 Our video cards were tested at resolutions of 1920x1080, 2560x1600 and 3840x2160 at the maximum graphics quality settings allowed by the game. The test was performed at all basic quality settings ( Low , Medium , High , Highest ) without NVIDIA technologies, plus Highest  with NVIDIA technologies enabled ( with the exception of NVIDIA ShadowLibs - most AMD video cards do not support it ).

Testing of the video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the  MSI Afterburner program. The results on video cards from AMD and NVIDIA at resolutions of  1920x1080 and 2560x1440 with various anti-aliasing settings were taken as the indicator. By default, the graph displays the most up-to-date solutions. Other graphics cards are added and removed from the chart at the reader's request.
