On November 13, the German studio Crytek released the Neon Noir benchmark, with ray tracing effects in DirectX 11 mode.

 Neon Noir uses a rather modified version of the CryEngine 5.6.5 engine, where the ray tracing function is implemented on the basis of the Total Illumination tool, independent of the graphics API.

THE GRAFICAL PART

In this subsection of our review, the main graphical aspects of this game are revealed. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphics settings and the quality of the development of the main visual aspects.

GAME ENGINE

The CryEngine game engine is Crytek's first commercial game engine. Its development began immediately after the founding of the company. On March 26, 2004, Crytek's first commercial computer game and the first game to use CryEngine, "Far Cry", went to retailers.

When video cards supporting pixel and vertex shaders version 3.0 were released, Crytek developed version 1.2 of the engine, which used some of the features of pixel shaders 3 and vertex shaders version 2.0b to improve graphics quality. The essence of the innovations boiled down to the fact that on complexly illuminated objects, especially when forming relief images, according to the old version 1.1 (or 1.0), the illumination was calculated in several passes, which wasted a lot of accelerator resources. The introduction of shaders 2.0b and 3.0 made it possible to place all these complex calculations in one very long shader, which fits only in the 2.0b and 3.0 specifications.

On March 30, 2006, Ubisoft acquired all rights to the CryEngine game engine developed by Crytek. All rights to the computer game Far Cry were also acquired. All intellectual property was acquired in perpetuity and in full; Under the terms, Ubisoft received exclusive rights to all intellectual property of the game and engine, including the trademark, logo, characters, story, franchise, setting, development and publishing rights. Therefore, from that moment on, Crytek had no legal or legal ties to the engine, could not use either the engine itself or the CryEngine trademark. With Far Cry, we are further consolidating our leading position in the FPS genre. After the release of all the patches from Crytek to the game "Far Cry", the engine develops in two directions.

Since Ubisoft acquired all rights to CryEngine and Far Cry in 2006, Ubisoft continued to develop the engine for Far Cry Instincts and Far Cry Instincts: Evolution for Xbox, Far Cry Instincts: Predator for Xbox 360, and Far Cry Vengeance for Nintendo. Wii. As stated in an official interview with Louis-Pierre Farand, Far Cry 2 Lead Producer, the Dunia Engine will use only 2-3 percent of the original CryEngine code.

Crytek used the engine as the basis for CryEngine 2. South Korean developer and publisher NCsoft licensed CryEngine for use in the MMORPG Aion: The Tower of Eternity. For this game, the engine has been significantly redesigned, optimized and "sharpened" for the specifics of multiplayer online games.

In September 2009, Crytek announced its intention to make CryEngine free for UK universities. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Crytek UK Managing Director Carl Hilton explained this as the company's commitment to providing students and graduates with a life-changing experience in game development. The first university where Crytek plans to roll out the engine within a month is Bournemouth University. “I think we made a very promising move,” Hilton said. “Students and universities cannot read minds, and they won’t know what we do and how we do it until they get in touch with people who actually work in this industry.”

In the spring of 2016, the company switched to a pay-what-you-want distribution model that allows you to freely use the engine for game development (free use for non-game applications is prohibited), the CryEngine code was published (under a proprietary license) on GitHub.

On March 20, 2018, Crytek published the source code for the CRYENGINE Sandbox game resource editor and a preview of the next release of the CRYENGINE 5.5 game engine. A new model is also presented, which implies the transition to paying deductions for the use of the engine in the amount of 5% with an income of more than 5 thousand euros per year. For projects registered before June 30, 2018, it is possible to retain the old "Pay What You Want" scheme (fee at your discretion without deductions).

Product version 5.6 was released this summer, and the next engine revision 5.7 should be expected no earlier than spring 2020. Distinctive features of CryEngine 5.7 will be full support for the DirectX 12 and Vulkan APIs in the Sandbox engine and game editor, as well as support for Ray Tracing effects, which were shown in the Neon Noir technical demo at GDC 2019.

All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality by MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. Below is a video of the test segment :

At a resolution of  1920x1080,   an average FPS of 25 frames was shown by video cards of the Radeon R9 290 or GeForce GTX 960 level. A  minimum FPS of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of the Radeon RX 590 or GeForce GTX 980 level . A comfortable average FPS of 60 frames can be provided by Radeon RX Vega 64 or GeForce GTX 1660 Ti solutions.

At a resolution  of 2560x1440,  an average FPS of 25 frames was shown by video cards of the level Radeon RX Vega 56 or GeForce GTX 1060 . A minimum FPS of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of the level Radeon VII or GeForce GTX 1070 . A comfortable average FPS of 60 frames can be provided by GeForce RTX 2070 Super solutions.

At a resolution  of 3840x2160,  an average FPS of 25 frames was shown by video cards of the GeForce RTX 2060 Super level . A minimum FPS of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of  the GeForce RTX 2080 level.

VIDEO MEMORY CONSUMPTION

Testing of the video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the  MSI Afterburner program. The results on video cards from AMD and NVIDIA at resolutions of  1920x1080 and 2560x1440 with various anti-aliasing settings were taken as the indicator. By default, the graph displays the most up-to-date solutions. Other graphics cards are added and removed from the chart at the reader's request.

When using  NVIDIA video cards  , FX 4300 or Core i 3 2100 processors showed an acceptable rate of at least 25 frames, and solutions of the Ryzen 3 1200 or Core i 3 2100 level can provide an FPS of at least 60 frames .   

When using  AMD video cards , FX 4300 or Core i 3 2100 processors showed an acceptable rate of at least 25 frames , and Ryzen 3 1200 or Core i 3 2100 solutions can provide an FPS of at least 60 frames .

The test was conducted on the base configuration of the Core i 9 9900K with 32 GB DDR4 3200 MGz pre-installed memory. All used RAM was taken as an indicator. The RAM test on the entire system was carried out on various video cards without running extraneous applications (browsers, etc.).
