Portal RTX: PC Performance Benchmarks for Graphics Cards and Processors
BASIC INFORMATION ON THE GAME |
Released : 2007
Genre : Arcade, 1st person, 3D, logic, puzzle, action
Developer : Valve Corporation
White walls, complete isolation, a strange voice in my head. No, this is not a psychiatric hospital, you are on a testing ground. Who you are? A pretty woman who had the misfortune to test a new top-secret device under the strict guidance of GLaDOS. The reward will be a delicious cake. The device, by the way, is more expensive than the internal organs of all the inhabitants of the city and their annual income. But this is so, by the way. What kind of contraption ended up in the hands of the unlucky heroine? This, as the seemingly friendly artificial intelligence assures, is a unique portal launcher that creates holes in space through which you can pass! It would be necessary to test this case, which will have to be done in the next three hours at nineteen training grounds. The possibilities are really colossal: you can go through each place in many ways, it all depends on your ingenuity and imagination.

THE GRAFICAL PART |
In this review, we present a test of The Callisto Protocol game, which was tested on current families of GEFORCE RTX and RADEON RX video cards that support hardware ray tracing.
In this subsection of our review, the main graphical aspects of this game are revealed. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphics settings and the quality of the development of the main visual aspects.
SUPPORTED OC AND GRAPHICS API |
Portal is only supported on Windows 10/11.
The priority and primary graphics API for Portal is Vulkan .
GAME ENGINE |
The path-traced game remaster was created by Lightspeed Studios under the close supervision of Valve using the NVIDIA RTX Remix toolkit to create similar mods to classic games. The RTX Remix graphics engine uses path tracing, also known as "full ray tracing", to render photorealistic lighting and movie-like effects, where this rendering method has long been the standard. In addition to a new lighting system with fully dynamic global illumination, reflections, shadows, refractions, and other effects, the world-class artists at Lightspeed Studios have also painstakingly recreated nearly all of Portal's elements in higher-poly models and textures. The result is a radically updated look for one of the most influential games in the world, originally released in 2007. All,
New graphical tricks used in Portal with RTX include :
NVIDIA DLSS 3 is a set of 3 technologies that improves performance by up to 4 times and reduces latency by up to 2 times compared to rendering at native resolution without these technologies. DLSS 3 has a new "frame generation" feature that uses a separate neural network, motion vectors and optical flow to generate additional high quality frames. To double the frame rate, the generator needs to run in a couple of milliseconds, no more, so this feature relies entirely on the fast optical flow engine of the RTX 40 series graphics cards, which is 3 times faster than the previous generation engine, and on the new much faster tensor cores 4 th generation.
NVIDIA Reflex- Significantly improves game control responsiveness by reducing system latency. Latency is reduced by integrating the technology into the game - Reflex eliminates the frame queue for rendering between the processor and the video card. By default, this queue can be up to 3-4 frames, with Reflex buffering is reduced to 0 frames - a few milliseconds before a frame is finished rendering, Reflex tells the game engine to start capturing control and preparing data for the next frame. This allows you to reduce processing delays on the system by half and significantly reduce control delays - by 50%. By integrating into the game engine, Reflex is much more effective in reducing latency than a simple "frames per prerender" option in drivers that can't completely eliminate buffering like Reflex does.
NVIDIA Real Time Denoisers is a new space-time filter library for ray tracing noise reduction. These filters deliver superior performance and provide the industry's best quality and detail for ray tracing effects.
The new lighting system is made possible by NVIDIA RTXDI, NVIDIA ReSTIR GI and the addition of Physically Based Materials/Rendering (PBR) respecting the law of conservation of energy and material properties such as roughness, metallicity and others needed to realistically display various materials such as reflections. on polished or rusty metal surfaces. Rough surfaces produce matte, diffuse reflections that are hard to see in detail but obscure surrounding objects like in real life, preventing light from penetrating through objects, while smooth surfaces where the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection produce sharp and highly detailed specular reflections. .
NVIDIA RTX Direct Illumination allows you to add an unlimited number of direct lights of any size and shape, each of which casts not only light but also shadows, which is impossible with classic rasterization techniques.
NVIDIA Reservoir Spatio-Temporal Importance Resampling GI, or Sample Importance-Related Spatio-Temporal Resampling Global Illumination (ReSTIR GI), is a ray-traced global illumination algorithm that allows important light sources to be sampled more frequently, resulting in orders of magnitude better results. high-quality lighting with a small number of rays (samples that are used to calculate the global illumination of the scene). This algorithm works much smarter than simple ray-traced global illumination techniques, dramatically improving the quality of ray-traced graphics when used in conjunction with NVIDIA Real Time Denoisers filters.
Physically Based Materials and Rendering - Portal Remastered Labs have been enhanced with materials that mimic the physical properties of real materials. The RTX Remix PBR lighting system supports materials that can emit light, as well as material properties such as roughness and metallicity, which, when combined with tracing, allow for incredibly realistic lighting effects such as reflections, refraction, translucency, transparency, and global illumination.
ADVANCED GAME SETTINGS |
Portal settings is located in a separate menu - in the main, you can only change the screen resolution.
Below we have provided screenshots of the game at various graphics settings, where our readers can see the difference between the minimum and high graphics quality settings on GEFORCE GTX and RADEON RX video cards that do not support hardware ray tracing.

Our video cards were tested at 1920x1080 , 2560x1600 , 3840x2160 resolutions with graphics quality settings with and without ray tracing with RTX video cards. On AMD cards, the game does not work correctly at the moment.
GPU TEST |
In the test of video cards, the default resolution is 1920x1080, other resolutions are added and removed manually. You can also remove and add any positions of video cards. You can also select any of our test processors from the list in the drop-down menu, comparing its performance with the given video card tests (by default, the most productive solution is selected). The test is carried out on the most productive CPU in this game and is scaled to other processors, taking into account their testing on NVIDIA and AMD video cards.

VIDEO MEMORY CONSUMPTION |
Testing of the video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the MSI Afterburner program. The results on video cards from AMD and NVIDIA at resolutions of 1920x1080, 2560x1440 and 3840x2160 with various anti-aliasing settings were taken as the indicator. By default, the graph displays the most up-to-date solutions. Other graphics cards are added and removed from the chart at the reader's request.
