ATI Eyefinity (AMD Eyefinity or simply Eyefinity) is a technology developed by the American company AMD, which allows multiple displays to be connected to a personal computer. ATI Eyefinity is implemented in video cards that use ATI Radeon R800 “Evergreen” GPUs. ATI Eyefinity involves connecting from one to six displays, inclusive, to one video card. ATI Eyefinity provides simultaneous video output to two independent displays. Modes for duplicating and stretching the desktop across multiple monitors are supported, and a special new feature allows you to group displays into one large screen on which you can display a PC desktop or, for example, video, as well as windowed or full-screen XNUMXD applications.

On September 10, 2009, AMD held a presentation on board the USS Hornet aircraft carrier, where it announced “ATI Eyefinity” technology and specifications for various series of GPUs in the Radeon HD 5xxx line. The day after this presentation, Carl Jones, a Crytek employee, showed a demo video of the CryEngine 3 game engine, which was run on a Radeon 5xxx video card and on three displays. At the same time, the total resolution of the “picture” displayed on three screens was 7 x 680 pixels (triple full HD), which is equal to 3 megapixels.

The official release of the first video cards that can work with six monitors – Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition, was scheduled for March 11, 2010. However, on March 8, it was announced that the release of these video cards would be delayed. According to unofficial data, the delay is due to the unavailability of software, namely drivers for such a specific product. According to another version, the release of the ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition was specially brought closer to the official release of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 400 series video cards, which was supposed to take place on March 26, 2010.

In the RV870 GPUs, the image output unit has been redesigned in such a way that the chip supports image output to up to six output devices. The number of supported monitors depends on the specific board configuration and can reach six or three.

The R800 chip has six built-in TMDS transmitters, and on standard video cards, four of them provide two Dual Link DVI connectors. Therefore, standard HD 5xxx video cards only support output to three or fewer output devices. To display images on six displays, a special version of video cards labeled “HD 5870 SIX” or “Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity Edition” is required.

Multi-monitor configurations can operate in desktop clone and extension modes. One large image can be composed of multiple monitors, this is applicable both for desktop images and for full-screen video and 7D applications. This feature is supported in Windows Vista, Windows XNUMX, Linux support will be implemented in future versions of the ATI Catalyst driver.

AMD announced collaboration with display manufacturers, in particular with Samsung. They produce special versions of monitors with a screen size of 23″ with support for a resolution of 1920×1080, DisplayPort, DVI and VGA interfaces, as well as a very thin frame around the screen measuring 7-8 mm.

To connect 3 Only the following connection configurations are possible for monitors to video cards:

DVI-DVI-DP
DVI-DVI-DVI (using DP to DVI Adapter)
DVI-HDMI-DP
DVI-VGA-DP (using DVI to VGA Adapter)
VGA-VGA-VGA (using adapters DVI to VGA Adapter, DVI to VGA Adapter, Active DP to VGA Adapter)
DVI-VGA-HDMI (using Active DP to VGA Adapter)

 GPU test

All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality by the Fraps program in the most resource-intensive part of the game. All video cards were tested this time on a platform with a Core™ i7 processor. All tests were carried out at the maximum acceptable quality of graphics settings.

All our video cards were tested at maximum quality settings on two Full HD monitors combined thanks to Eyefinity technology in a resolution of 3840×1080. To connect 3 monitors you already need a Display Port, or its active adapter, which somewhat complicates the overall availability of this technology. Therefore, before Display Port monitors become widespread on the market, we conducted the AMD Eyefinity test on two displays, which is currently an affordable and hassle-free solution for every user.

 AMD

Games were tested at high and medium graphics quality levels with and without AA 8X anti-aliasing activated. We decided not to use the minimum graphics settings; we think many would not be interested in playing at the minimum settings, and even in such a space. In the graphs, video cards that could not provide comfortable playability, that is, could not overcome the average acceptable FPS of 25 frames, were indicated in gray.

 Crysis

 Crysis_2011_01_22_14_48_52_413

A huge advantage of Crysis compared to its peers is its excellent graphics. Owners of personal computers have never seen pictures of this level. Millions of detailed particles, natural shadows, reflections of the sun on the grass and water – all this is mesmerizing. The dynamic change of day and night is worked out perfectly – the local sunsets are simply stunning. The characters’ faces, their facial expressions and acting are incomparable. The only problem was that in 2007 there was no computer in the world that could run the project at the Very High settings level. But at the moment this issue has disappeared and we can fully enjoy the excellent graphics without any slowdowns.

So, in our graphic old-timer Crysis, you can also set the ultra-high resolution mode. Without activating full-screen antialiasing, the minimum required for high quality settings is a Radeon HD 5830, and for ultra-high quality settings this threshold rises to the level of the Radeon HD 5870.

When full-screen antialiasing is activated, all video cards with 1 gigabyte of video memory on board are left out of work. For high quality settings, the level is suitable  Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity, and for ultra-high-end ones a minimum Radeon HD 6970.

Just Cause 2

 JustCause2_2011_01_22_15_12_27_317

The game is developed on a completely new Avalanche Engine 2.0 using NVIDIA CUDA technology and only works on PCs with DirectX 10 or later installed; accordingly, Just Cause 2 will not run on Windows XP. Havok Physics is responsible for the physics in the game.

With the activation of smoothing, the balance of forces changes significantly. At medium settings, the minimum level can be considered the Radeon HD 6870, but for high settings AMD does not yet have such single-chip video cards…

Battlefield Bad Company 2

 BFBC2Game_2011_01_23_13_08_45_206

The game uses the Frostbite engine, which ensures complete destructibility of the surrounding world. An explosion can bring down a house; after several bullet hits, walls crumble, tanks break through fences. This seriously changes the tactical component of the game: you can no longer hide from bullets and explosions in a building, you can enter the house not through the door, but by blowing up the wall with an under-barrel grenade launcher, instead of destroying the transmitter located inside the house, you can simply collapse the building using a tank or explosives. In the Microsoft Windows operating system, the game engine supports graphics display using DirectX 9, DirectX 10, DirectX 10.1, and starting from version 1.5 – DirectX 11.

With full-screen antialiasing enabled, virtually nothing changes. For medium anti-aliasing settings you still need a Radeon HD 5750, but for maximum anti-aliasing settings you need a Radeon HD 5830.

Aliens vs Predator: D3D11 Benchmark

The test was more or less loyal to video cards and for comfortable playability, players will need a performance level of Radeon HD 5830 and higher…

Metro 2033

 metro2033_2011_01_22_16_33_19_753

Of course, Metro 2033 became a second wind for our compatriots. Unlike the moldy STALKER, literally everything in it breathes freshness and manufacturability. The game includes support for all modern graphics APIs, switchable directly in the graphics menu: DirectX 9, DirectX 10 and DirectX 11.

Well, now we have reached the heavyweight of our time – Metro 2033. At medium quality settings, you can play more or less comfortably on a Radeon HD 6970 video card. At high and maximum settings, not a single single-chip video card will be enough. The 5XXX series, due to the small amount of memory, is generally not stable at maximum settings in this resolution.  Radeon HD 6850 and Radeon HD 6870, thanks to a more optimized architecture, were able to compete, but as we see, unsuccessfully.

Tests with MSAA 4X enabled showed that none of the tested single-chip video cards are able to fully provide an acceptable level of performance. Another nuance is the mandatory presence of 2 gigabytes of video memory, without which you will see a solid slideshow.

AMD EyefinityHowever, the technology for large display of information on the screen is currently in demand not only in specialized applications, but also in the modern gaming industry. Thanks to its use, you can achieve simply incredible resolutions! For its simplest implementation, a pair of identical monitors will suit you.

The only disadvantages are the mandatory presence of the Display Port function in the monitor when using three or more monitors, and the frames of the monitors themselves, which can create slight discomfort. And if you have decided to create a similar solution at home, then you should think about these issues before purchasing. For maximum quality settings in games, we recommend using the 69XX series of video cards with 2 gigabytes of video memory, and in some cases, operating in CrossFire mode.
