GAME ENGINE |
REDengine is a game engine independently developed by CD Projekt RED. It was developed exclusively for the company’s non-linear computer role-playing games. REDengine is portable between 32- and 64-bit platforms and runs under the Microsoft Windows operating system. The engine was first used in the game The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. REDengine 2, an updated version of the engine used in the second Witcher, also runs on the Xbox 360 and under the OS X and Linux operating systems, but these ports use a compatibility layer similar to Wine, called eON. REDengine 3 was developed exclusively for the 64-bit platform and also runs on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
The first part of The Witcher was based on Aurora Engine technology, a game engine developed by the Canadian company BioWare and first used in the computer role-playing game Neverwinter Nights, which was released on June 18, 2002.
REDengine 2
REDengine uses the Havok middleware for physics rendering, Scaleform GFx for the user interface and FMOD for audio. The engine was used to port the game “The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings” to the Xbox 360.
REDengine 3
REDengine 3 was developed exclusively for the 64-bit platform. CD Projekt RED created REDengine 3 to develop open world games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
The engine introduces improvements to facial and other computer animation; Lighting effects no longer cause contrast ratio to decrease. The engine includes a flexible renderer that supports deferred shading on modern graphics pipelines, resulting in support for a wide range of cinematic effects, including bokeh and flares. The surface system uses tessellation and easily blendable layers of different materials.
REDengine 4
In 2017, CD Project revealed that they were working on four projects: city creation, seamless multiplayer, a cinematic feel, and animation excellence. All these projects will be included in REDengine4.
