In the story, in the near future, spaceships from another solar system have arrived to Earth. The Votans who control them – a collective of several alien races – are going to colonize our planet. People got in touch with the aliens, which greatly surprised the guests from outer space: they thought that there was no one on the surface except flowers and birds.
The negotiations lasted six years, and then moved into a more familiar stage – the exchange of explosive “arguments”. Someone sabotaged the Votan cruisers, they fell to the surface, and terraforming modules were activated inside their hulls, which began to change the Earth without control. Defiance takes place decades after the war. The cradle of humanity is unrecognizable: the flora, fauna and topography have become completely different, and an asteroid belt has appeared in orbit.

This subsection of our review highlights the main graphical aspects of this game. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphic settings and the quality of development of the main visual aspects.
Supported OS and graphics API |
DEFIANCE Beta is supported by major Windows operating systems, which include Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Other operating systems are not currently supported by developers and are unlikely to receive support.
The preferred and primary graphics API for DEFIANCE Beta multiplayer is DirectX 9.
Game engine |
The game is based on its own game engine, which was developed by Trion World Network for use in proprietary products, mainly produced for the MMO market.
We did not find any more detailed information about the game engine, except for the data listed above…
Advanced Game Settings |
DEFIANCE Beta does not currently have a wide range of graphics options. And although there is a “custom” settings item in the game, they are not available at the moment. So we had three modes at our disposal – low, high and medium quality settings.

The biggest gap in quality in DEFIANCE Beta is seen when moving from low to medium settings. When moving from medium to high, the difference is practically not visible.
General visual design and game physics |
DEFIANCE Beta has pretty mediocre graphics today. As we already wrote above, there are not so many graphic settings in the game, and the quality of changing them remains almost at the same level. So those who believed that the game will please you bright graphics, like The Secret World, they will be disappointed.
In terms of graphics, the DEFIANCE game has stopped somewhere at the level of five years ago and it is unlikely that any innovations before release will be able to save the situation. But this shortcoming can be compensated by the gameplay, which is a cross between many genres and will be of interest to sophisticated MMO fans.
Next, we will move directly to gaming tests and determine what impact this game has on modern computer hardware.

GPU test |
All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality by the program MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. The average and minimum FPS were taken as performance indicators. Below is a video of the test segment:
Our video cards were tested at separate screen sizes of 1920×1080 and 2560×1600 at the maximum graphics quality settings allowed by DEFIANCE Beta. Multi-chip configurations from AMD scale well, but NVIDIA does not yet have SLI support for this game, although this is not critical. The game has a locked vertical sync function, which cannot be bypassed through drivers on AMD cards, so all video cards were tested with a vertical sync limit of 60 FPS.
Testing at maximum quality settings 1920×1080
At a resolution of 1920×1080 at maximum settings, the optimal FPS indicator was shown by video cards of the Radeon HD 5750 level or GeForce GTS 450.
Testing at maximum quality settings 2560×1600
At a resolution of 2560×1600 at maximum settings, an acceptable FPS indicator was shown by video cards of the Radeon HD 7750 level or GeForce GTX 550 Ti. The optimal video cards will be Radeon HD 5830 or GeForce GTX 560 and higher.
VRAM test |
Testing of video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the program MSI Afterburner. The indicator was based on results on top video cards from AMD and NVIDIA with separate screen sizes 1680×1050, 1920×1080 and 2560×1600.
Testing at maximum memory GPU quality settings
The recommended amount of video memory usage for this game is about 512-768 MB for basic graphics quality settings. For ultra resolutions same availability will be required 1024 MB on board video cards.
CPU test |
We tested processor dependence on 15 models of basic configurations that are relevant today. The test was carried out in those places where the value of video cards for the game is minimal and its load was less than 99%, this time at a resolution of 1920×1080 with maximum graphics quality settings.
Testing at minimum quality settings 1920×1080
All of our processors performed well in DEFIANCE Beta. It’s a shame that the game only supports 2 threads and is not capable of unlocking multi-core models.
RAM test |
Testing of the RAM consumed by the game was carried out by monitoring directly through the Windows task manager. The test was carried out on the basic configuration of Core i 7 [email protected] GHz with 8GB DDR3 2400 MGz pre-installed memory.
Testing at various quality settings
As we can see, with various basic quality settings, the amount of RAM consumed in DEFIANCE Beta is at the level of 400-749 megabytes.
