We present to your attention the testing of the new NVIDIA 7XX series video cards, which were released about a month ago and recently appeared in our test laboratory. This review will focus on two representatives of this series, the GeForce GTX 770 and GeForce GTX 780, which are aimed at the upper price segment.

The GeForce GTX 770 is a pumped-up version of the GeForce GTX 680, which received slightly increased frequency characteristics, a more efficient cooling system from the GeForce GTX TITAN and a more powerful power subsystem.

GeForce GTX 780 is the younger brother of the single-chip flagship GeForce GTX TITAN and has similar design features, such as the cooling system and power subsystem.
The difference from the GeForce GTX TITAN is that the video card has a slightly reduced number of functional units and half the amount of video memory.

Now let’s talk a little about overclocking, let’s start with GeForce GTX 770 – without any problems we were able to increase the frequency of the graphics chip by 150 MHz and by 500 MHz for the memory. Dynamically, the frequency of the graphics chip could rise to 1300 MHz. During overclocking, the video card turned out to be very quiet, thanks to the excellent cooling system, and showed performance simply unattainable for the GeForce GTX 680.
Overclocking GeForce GTX 780 I was also very pleased. We were also able to increase the frequency of the graphics chip by 150 MHz and by 1000 MHz for the memory. In some cases, the video card could raise the frequency to 1150 MHz, while the chip temperature did not exceed 85 degrees, which is 5 degrees lower than Titan and with less turbine noise. Another surprise was that the overclocked performance of the GeForce GTX 780 was in some cases on par with the GeForce GTX TITAN!
Well, then we will move directly to tests of the GeForce GTX 770/GeForce GTX 780 in comparison with other single-chip solutions.

All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality using MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. The minimum and average frame size is taken as the performance indicator.

Our video cards were tested at separate screen sizes of 1920×1080 and 2560×1600 at the maximum graphics quality settings allowed by the games, and, of course, by the resources of the video cards. In this case, we took games that, at different quality settings, have the greatest impact on the performance drop of video cards. These include the most resource-intensive games of our time – Metro 2033 Total War: Shogun 2 and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, as well as the latest innovations in the gaming industry.

The test was carried out on one of the most powerful gaming configurations to date based on the Intel Core i7-3970X with overclocking to 4.9 GHz, 16 gigabytes of DDR3 RAM with a frequency of 2133 MHz and an SSD OCZ Vertex 3 hard drive.
Metro 2033
Metro 2033 came out about two years ago and to this day is one of the most technologically advanced games, and, of course, one of the most demanding. This is the only game from 2010 that we took to test modern top-end video cards.

You can only play Metro 2033 at 1920×1080 starting with a GEFORCE GTX 780. For higher resolutions, no single-chip solution will offer a comfortable FPS.
Total War: Shogun 2
Total War: Shogun 2 is an excellent continuation of its Total War series that will appeal to many of its fans. Graphically, the game has become a leader in the abundance of graphical bells and whistles and special effects, representing a mixture of scale and beauty unprecedented in the world of strategy. The test was carried out with the maximum possible graphics settings in the game. Only the vertical sync function remained disabled. And just like in the 2011 video card test at a resolution of 2560×1600, video cards with a video memory capacity of at least two gigabytes were able to show themselves worthy.

NVIDIA has better optimized its solutions for Total War: Shogun 2. All GEFORCE GTX video cards showed excellent performance.
The Witcher 2: The Assassins of Kings
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings has become one of the most beautiful, technologically advanced and spectacular games of last year. At the moment, the game is one of the most resource-intensive games of the present time. The game settings for the test were turned up to the maximum.

We have made tremendous progress regarding the second part, and what appears before us is not a console porting product, but a very modern and technologically advanced project.

GEFORCE GTX 680 – at the moment, a reasonable approach to purchasing this solution is in question. With a market price higher than that of the GEFORCE GTX 770, few enthusiasts will consider purchasing this video accelerator.
GEFORCE GTX TITAN –it’s still the fastest single-chip solution on the market today, with a huge amount of video memory and, of course, an exorbitant price. But for modern games, the optimality of purchasing these video cards after the release of GEFORCE GTX 780 remains in question…
GEFORCE GTX 770 – This is an excellent solution in its category to replace the GEFORCE GTX 680, which has good performance, cooling, overclocking and can compete on equal terms with the Radeon HD 7970 GE.
GEFORCE GTX 780 – paradoxically, this is a competitor to GEFORCE GTX TITAN, which also costs $350 less than the older solution and, when overclocked, its performance is comparable to the overclocked version of TITAN. Three gigabytes of video memory is enough for all modern games and for any quality settings. This is definitely one of those top solutions that is really worth the money.
Radeon HD 7970 GE – this video card is still in great demand among PC gamers. At the moment, its performance is comparable to the GEFORCE GTX 770. Of course, the video card is much noisier and hotter than its newly made competitor, but it has a small bonus – three gigabytes of memory on board.
It is worth noting that for all modern games for FullHD, at maximum quality settings, a GEFORCE GTX 770/Radeon HD 7970 GE will be quite sufficient and there is no point in overpaying a large amount for a video card.
GEFORCE GTX 780/TITAN is sufficient for almost all games at a resolution of 2560×1600, but they are not optimal for these resolutions. Such high resolutions will require configurations of several graphics chips, the tests of which we will introduce you to in our next review…
