GAME ENGINE
 
Developed by Ubisoft Singapore, Skull and Bones began development in 2013, initially conceived as an expansion for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, then as an MMO spin-off called Black Flag Infinite, and finally becoming an independent project. The game went through several changes in direction and scope over the course of development, going over budget several times over, changing locations from the Caribbean to Hyperborea and eventually to East Africa and Southeast Asia. The gameplay also saw many changes, focusing on naval exploration and ship-to-ship combat before both of these aspects were abandoned in favor of land-based survival inspired by games like Rust. The project cost Ubisoft more than $120 million.

The game was first revealed at Ubisoft's E3 2017 press conference and was due to release in late 2018, but was then delayed indefinitely. In September 2020, it was announced that development was continuing, but there was a "new vision" for the game, requiring additional development time. In May 2021, Ubisoft announced a further delay until fiscal year 2022–2023. In July 2022, the company set a release date of November 8, and the game will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. In October 2023, it was announced that the game would be released in early 2024, and during The Game Awards 2023, a final release date of February 16, 2024 was announced.

In terms of PC specs, Skull and Bones supports 4K HDR and unlimited framerate, as well as support for widescreen and multi-monitor settings. The game also supports image enhancement using ray tracing, DLSS and FSR, allowing players to fully customize advanced control options. To ensure smooth connectivity even during periods of high activity, the game will use dedicated physical and cloud servers around the world. During matchmaking, players will be able to set PvP and PvE settings appropriate to their Infamy level and play with friends regardless of their level. BattlEye and VMProtect will be used to combat cheaters and hackers.

Minimum and recommended system requirements for PC range from presets for 1080p 30 FPS to ultra preset for 4K 60 FPS, requiring an i7-4790 or Ryzen 5 1600 and a GeForce GTX 1060 6GB or Radeon RX 570 4GB for minimum settings up to an i511600K or Ryzen 5 5600X and GeForce RTX 3080 10GB or Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB for the 4K 60 FPS ultra preset.

Development and Features of the Game Engine

Development of Skull and Bones began in 2013 at Ubisoft Singapore. The game was initially conceived as an expansion to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and then turned into an independent project. The project went through many changes during development, including location changes and gameplay re-imaginings, which led to significant delays and increased budgets. Major problems in development included conflicting ideas, management problems, and lack of coherent direction.

The game is a "shared world" where players can explore oceans online and encounter other players' ships. Ubisoft promises seamless connectivity with dedicated physical and cloud servers around the world to ensure stability during peak activity times. Players will be able to customize their PvP and PvE preferences, and will also be protected from cheaters and hackers using BattlEye and VMProtect.

All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality using MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. Below is a video of the test segment:

 Our video cards were tested at resolutions of 1920x1080 , 2560x1440 and 3840x2160 with maximum graphics quality settings. The game has a 60 frame lock, but is disabled by enabling vertical sync in the game and disabling it in the drivers.

In the video card test, the default resolution is 1920x1080; other resolutions are added and removed manually. You can also remove and add any positions of video cards. You can also select any of our test processors from the list in the drop-down menu, comparing its performance with the given video card tests (by default, the most productive solution is selected). The test is carried out on the most powerful CPU in this game and is scaled to other processors, taking into account their testing on NVIDIA and AMD video cards.

A comfortable average FPS of 60 frames can be provided by Radeon RX 6650 or GeForce RTX 2070 solutions .

Testing of video memory consumed by the game was carried out by  MSI Afterburner. The indicator was based on results on video cards from AMD and NVIDIA at resolutions of  1920x1080, 2560x1440 and 3840x2160 with various anti-aliasing settings. By default, the graph displays the most current solutions. Other video cards are added and removed from the chart at the request of the reader.

You can also select any tested video card from the list in the drop-down menu, comparing its performance with the given processor test results  (by default, the most productive solution from NVIDIA is selected). Testing takes place on the most powerful NVIDIA and AMD video cards and scales to low-end models.

The test was carried out on the basic configuration of Core i 9 13900K with 32 GB DDR5 6400 MHz pre-installed memory. All used RAM was taken as an indicator. The RAM test for the entire system was carried out on various video cards without launching third-party applications (browsers, etc.).
