DiRT 4: PC Performance Benchmarks for Graphics Cards and Processors

The first rally races can be remembered from the days of Plastation 1, for which more than one racing simulator was released in the mud. Having come a long way of evolution, racing simulators have improved visually, and updated game engines have completely erased the line between the physics of driving a real car and drawn in the game. DiRT 4 is a racing simulator and includes the latest achievements in the development of car games.

Considering already the 4th part in the DiRT game series, we can conclude that the fans of racing in the mud are not getting smaller. The development of the new part is carried out by the Codemasters studio, which has such games as F1 2016, Grid and previous parts of DiRT.

In this subsection of our review, the main graphical aspects of this game are revealed. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphics settings and the quality of the development of the main visual aspects.

DiRT 4 is supported by Windows 7/8 and Windows  10.

The priority and primary graphics API for DiRT 4 is  DirectX 11 .

DiRT 4, like all the latest games from this studio, was developed on a modified EGO engine version 3.0. EGO is a game engine modified from the Neon engine used in the Colin McRae: DiRT game developed by Codemasters and Sony Computer Entertainment using Sony's PhyreEngine cross-platform graphics engine. The engine is focused on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 hardware and software platforms.

On July 6, 2009, Brian Marshall, CTO of Codemasters, officially announced that the PC version of DiRT 2, which will use the "EGO" engine, will add support for DirectX 11. Thus, the "EGO" engine became the first engine for which DirectX 11 support has been implemented.

DiRT 4 has a very wide range of graphics settings. We have both basic and advanced settings at our disposal. They are quite enough for flexible game settings.

Activating anti-aliasing removes surface roughness, but somewhat soaps the picture.

The graphics in DiRT 4 are quite good, but still it did not become such a graphic breakthrough in the racing genre, as the first and second DiRTs did in their time.

All video cards were tested at the maximum graphics quality by the Action! program. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. Below is a video of the test segment :

Our video cards were tested at resolutions of 1920x1080, 2560x1600 and 3840x2160 at maximum graphics quality settings (ultra default with MSAA 8X). AMD CrossFireX and SLI were not supported by the game at the time of testing (there is an AMD profile, but it's useless).

In the test of video cards, the default resolution is 1920x1080, other resolutions are added and removed manually. You can also remove and add any positions of video cards. You can also choose any of our test processors from the list in the drop-down menu, comparing its performance with the given video card tests (by default, the most productive solution is selected).

At a resolution of 1920x1080, an average FPS of 25  frames was shown by video cards of the Radeon RX 460 or GeForce GTX 1050 Ti level. A minimum FPS of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of the level Radeon R7 370 or GeForce GTX 780 . A comfortable average FPS of frames can be provided by solutions like the Radeon RX 480 or GeForce GTX 1080.

At a resolution of 2560x1440, an average FPS of 25  frames was shown by video cards like the Radeon R9 380X or GeForce GTX 1050 Ti. A minimum  FPS  of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of the level Radeon R9 380X or GeForce GTX 1060 . Comfortable average FPS frames can be provided by solutions like  the Radeon R9 Fury X or GeForce GTX 1080.

At a resolution of 3840x2160 m, the minimum FPS  of at least 25  frames was shown by video cards of the GeForce GTX 780 Ti level. A minimum  FPS  of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of the GeForce GTX 1070 level . A comfortable average FPS of 60 frames can be provided by solutions of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti level.

Testing of the video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the  MSI Afterburner program. The results on video cards from AMD and NVIDIA at resolutions of  1920x1080 and 2560x1440 with various anti-aliasing settings were taken as the indicator. By default, the graph displays the most up-to-date solutions. Other graphics cards are added and removed from the chart at the reader's request.

When using NVIDIA video cards , FX-4100 or Core i 3 2100 processors showed an acceptable rate of at least 25 frames  A comfortable average FPS of 60 frames can be provided by solutions like  the FX-6300 or Core i 3 2100 .

The load of processor cores is also given. By default, results are shown for Core i 7 5960X and Ryzen 7 1800X processors. In the drop-down menu, you can add and remove absolutely any processors at the discretion of the reader.

The test was conducted on the base configuration Core i 7 5960X @ 4.6 GHz with the amount of pre-installed memory 32 GB DDR4 2400 MGz. All used RAM was taken as an indicator. The RAM test on the entire system was carried out on various video cards without running extraneous applications (browsers, etc.). In the graphics, you can add and remove any resolutions and video cards as desired.

Several conclusions can be drawn from the test. The DiRT 4 game is more loyal to AMD cards, but with an increase in resolution it weakens its positions, and in 4K resolution it loses in all respects. Based on the video and RAM tests, we can judge that for NVIDIA and AMD cards the game uses different resource allocation algorithms, which apparently determines such a balance in performance at different resolutions.
