Review and testing of MSI MPG Z790 Edge WiFi motherboard

In our review, we present to you the MSI MPG Z790 Edge WiFi motherboard, kindly provided to us by MSI. 

This subsection of our review highlights the main aspects of the MSI MPG Z790 Edge WiFi, such as appearance and hardware configuration.

The motherboard comes in a fairly beautiful and compact package, nothing that we think is superfluous:

MSI MPG Z790 Edge WiFi includes 4 DDR5 DIMMs with a maximum capacity of up to 192 gigabytes. For the file subsystem, the motherboard supports 5 M.2 PCIe 5.0/4.0 x4 slots and 6 SATA 6 Gb/s ports.

We can only install one video card here, since we only have one full-fledged PCI-E:

MSI MPG Z790 Edge WiFi is equipped with a highly reliable power supply system, 16 power modules of which are designed to work with powerful and power-hungry Intel processors.

MSI MPG Z790 Edge WiFi offers a large number of USB ports on the rear panel of interfaces, including HDMI, Display Port and two USB4 Type-C with 40 Gbps bandwidth and support for 8K display output. Wi-Fi 6E and 2.5G Ethernet interfaces are responsible for high data transfer speeds on the network.

MPG Series

It attracts users with a combination of high performance and unique style. More and more gamers, following modern trends, want to emphasize their individuality. That is why the MPG series focuses not only on the power of the line of devices, but also on their appearance.

Cooling system 

The larger heatsink increases the overall heat dissipation area for efficient cooling under high loads. A direct contact heat pipe connects two power system heat sinks to increase the overall heat dissipation area. Highly efficient thermal pads are used to transfer heat from the power elements to the radiator.

The cooling system for M.2 SSDs prevents performance degradation that can occur due to overheating. Double-sided M.2 Shield Frozr heatsinks prevent overheating of SSDs in M.2 slots operating in PCIe 5.0 speed mode.

A larger radiator is responsible for cooling the chipset – a silent, but at the same time very effective solution.

LIGHTNING GEN 5 PCIE STEEL ARMOR slots

The motherboard has additional solder points and is reinforced with steel elements, which allows the use of massive video cards without the risk of damage. MSI motherboards use an advanced PCI-E slot SMT(Surface Mount Technology) to reduce interference and electrical noise. Supports increased bandwidth and higher signal speeds of PCI-E 5.0.

AUDIO BOOST 5

Motherboards equipped with Audio Boost 5 technology use special Japanese Chemi-Con capacitors to ensure the best sound quality. In addition to this, the audio processor is protected from the influence of external electromagnetic fields using a special shield. The metal alloy from which the screen is made has the best shielding characteristics. 

As for overclocking the latest generations of processors, this is already a rather delicate science, because lately processors have been sold at maximum overclocked frequencies. Therefore, in pursuit of increasing the frequency of the processor, an ordinary person can even do the opposite – do harm by significantly increasing its heating and thereby reducing performance.

 To obtain maximum system performance, we used memory 32 GB DDR5 6000 Kingston FURY Renegade. MSI has a very convenient Memory Try It! option, in which we set the frequencies we needed, along with adequately selected timings:

Now we will show you how gaming performance changes at different frequencies using the example of the AIDA64 cache and memory test:

Well, as we can see, the best result was achieved with a memory frequency of 6400 with CL32 timings. We achieved the speed record with a memory frequency of 7000 with CL40 timings. It is worth noting that this is the highest frequency that we were able to achieve out of all the motherboards we tested!

As we can see, we get the highest minimum FPS on a system with a memory frequency of 7000 MHz

Well, after testing the MSI MPG Z790 Edge WiFi I left a pleasant impression. It is attractive in appearance and has good equipment. Much attention is paid to the power supply and cooling, which allows you to use the most powerful Intel series processors without any problems. I was also very pleased with the quality of RAM overclocking. Well, and most importantly, the price is affordable compared to other Z790s.
