Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a fresh open-world first-person adventure knight RPG game from the developers of Bohemia Interactive, 2K Czech and Altar Interactive powered by CryENGINE. The game will offer non-linear content, a revolutionary combat system and a living world. The game will be released on PC and proper generation consoles in 2015. The action of the game will unfold in the Holy Roman Empire at the end of the Middle Ages, where there is no magic, monsters, dragons, enchanted weapons and other attributes of "knightly" fantasy. The creators promise players a serious and harsh struggle for power in this gloomy world. 

In the full version, the creators promise a detailed game world, fights on horseback, sieges and large-scale battles.

THE GRAFICAL PART

In this subsection of our review, the main graphical aspects of this game are revealed. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphics settings and the quality of the development of the main visual aspects.

Supported OS and graphics API

Kingdom Come Deliverance Alpha is supported by major Windows operating systems, which include Windows Windows 7 and Windows 8. Other operating systems are not currently supported by the developers, but support for Linux and Mac OS X platforms is promised.

Game engine 

The technical basis of the Kingdom Come Deliverance project was the cross-platform CryEngine engine. This is a powerful set of tools that works on all major platforms and allows the developer to focus on the game and not bother with the technical part. CryEngine has been used to create cutting edge trilogies such as Crysis and Ryse.

CryEngine 3 was officially announced on March 11, 2009, and on October 14, 2009 the official release of the engine took place. The first game to be announced to use CryEngine 3 is Crytek's first-person shooter Crysis 2. At the end of March 2010, in an interview with GameReactor magazine, Cevat Yerli said that the developers from Crytek had to face a number of problems when developing CryEngine 3 for consoles: “The most difficult process was the process of scaling CryEngine 3 for consoles while maintaining image quality and the proper level of performance. Of course, there were problems, but we are very proud that our team managed to overcome them.”

Shaders in CryEngine 3 are written once in a high-level programming language, and then automatically compiled for each platform. Shader output is optimized through artist settings and for the 3D environment in which the shader will be used. Thanks to this, it becomes possible to create such effects as: “invisibility effect”, wet, dirty and frozen surfaces, which can be “layered” one on top of the other and combined with other shaders that simulate effects such as metal, glass and others.

CryEngine 3 supports per-pixel real-time lighting, reflections, refractions, volumetric heat effects and animated textures to simulate windows, bullet holes, sun glare surfaces and many other effects. CryEngine 3 shaders use the unified shader architecture that has been available since Direct3D 10.

"Ubershader" is a single shader program with many features: one to four lights, light types, specular cubemaps, fog, detailed textures, normal maps, specular textures, and more. Millions of Ubershader combinations can be generated. Ubershader uses dynamic branching, splitting into multiple passes, reducing combinations, and accepting options with less functionality and lower performance requirements. Uses asynchronous shader compilation and a distributed job system to compile the shader cache.  

 

Advanced game settings

 

Kingdom Come Deliverance Alpha currently has a meager supply of graphic settings. At the moment, only resolution and basic graphics settings are available in the game. There is no anti-aliasing option in alpha.

The difference between the graphics settings is visible on closer inspection. Particularly noticeable improvements in terms of elaboration of shadows and the level of detail.

General visual design and game physics

Kingdom Come Deliverance Alpha is currently at the alpha testing stage and it is still very, very early to talk about the graphical component. The Igorvaya location is represented by just one small section of the village, but still, it pleases the eye with a beautiful graphic design.

All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality by MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. The average and minimum FPS were taken as the performance indicator. Below is a video of the test segment:    

Our video cards were tested at resolutions of 1920x1080, 2560x1600 and 3840x2160 at the maximum graphics quality settings allowed by Kingdom Come Deliverance Alpha. SLI and AMD CrossFireX are currently not supported by the game.

With these settings,  video cards of the Radeon R7 260X or GeForce GTX 750 Ti level showed an acceptable FPS. The best solution would be  video cards like Radeon R9 270 or GeForce GTX 660.

With these settings,  video cards of the Radeon R9 285 or GeForce GTX 680 level showed an acceptable FPS.  The best solution would be  video cards of the Radeon K9 280X or GeForce GTX 770 level.

For 4K resolution, at maximum settings in Kingdom Come Deliverance Alpha, at the moment there are not even minimal graphic solutions...

Testing of the video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the  MSI Afterburner program. The results on top video cards from AMD and NVIDIA were taken as an indicator at resolutions of  1920x1080 and 2560x1600 with various anti-aliasing settings.

The recommended amount of video memory usage for a resolution of 1920x1080 will be 2048 MB of video memory,  for a resolution of 2560x1600 - 2048 MB of video memory and for a resolution of 3840x2160 about 3076 MB of video memory.

We tested processor dependence on 16 models of basic configurations that are relevant today. The test was carried out in those places where the value of the video card for the game is minimal and its load was less than 99%, this time at a resolution of 1920x1080 with maximum graphics quality settings.

The CPU performance in the game is sufficient for a comfortable frame rate and the disclosure of most video card models.

The game is capable of supporting up to 16 computational threads, distributing the load evenly between them. It fully loads up to 8 computational threads.

RAM test

The test was carried out on the base configuration Core i 7 5960X @ 4.6 GHz with 16GB DDR4 2400 MGz pre-installed memory. All used RAM was taken as an indicator. The RAM test on the entire system was carried out on various test benches without running extraneous applications (browsers, etc.).

As we can see, at various quality settings, the amount of RAM consumed in Kingdom Come Deliverance Alpha is at the level of 2.8 gigabytes.

With a 6 GB system, the Kingdom Come Deliverance Alpha consumes about 4.1 GB of RAM. In the presence of a system with 8 gigabytes, the RAM consumption of all RAM was 4.6 gigabytes. With a 16 GB system, total memory consumption was almost 5.1 GB. And with 32 gigabytes of RAM, the system consumes 6 gigabytes of RAM.
