Review: Playability

Neither more nor less, but 4 years have passed since the release of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Double Agent. Each time, hopes that Splinter Cell: Conviction was about to finally be released were constantly destroyed by the next transfer. But as you know, transfers cannot last forever and someday the game still had to be released. The owners of the shaman boxes were a little lucky and they were able to enjoy the gameplay two whole weeks earlier than the pisishniks. Most likely, the developers were patching up holes in their supernova protection. but this did not help them – the game was hacked by pirates two days after release and filled all torrent trackers. And when “fair” users suffer from a bunch of Ubisoft DRM protection bugs, all other “unfair” users play for fun without problems…

But enough about the sad stuff – let’s move on to the gameplay itself. The action takes place 3 years after the events of Splinter Cell: Double Agent, former Navy SEAL officer Victor Coste, apparently a friend and former teammate of Sam Fisher, was captured and interrogated by an unknown group of people, while he remembers and tells the main story plot. Two new features have been added to the gameplay – Mark and Execute and Desaturate Color. Mark and Execute – allows you to first mark all enemies in your field of view, and then kill them. The number of marks placed simultaneously depends on the player’s weapon. Once marked, a red or white dot appears above the target, depending on whether the target can be killed. If the marker is red, then it is possible to kill the target; if it is white, then there is no way. Desaturate Color – while the player is in the shadows, the graphics become less saturated – only enemies and interactive objects remain colored. The screen borders darken for added effect. And when the player comes out of the shadows, all becomes colored.

The game is made at a very high level and its style is very reminiscent of a cool Hollywood blockbuster. But as they say, nothing is perfect in our world. And there are some aspects of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction that really jump out at you. In our opinion, the most striking is Fischer’s invisibility. Being in the shadows a meter away from the enemies, they do not see our hero point-blank, do not turn around when we sneak up and do not pay the slightest attention to the doors that open inadvertently… What is even more surprising is their indifference to their partners, whose death ten meters away is quite natural event…

But whatever one may say, Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction can be considered the best representative in its series, because it’s not for nothing that the developers are aiming for a film adaptation of this particular game.

Review: Game Graphics

Unreal Engine again or again? Most likely allgo once again. The game is based on the LEAD Engine, a game engine developed for internal use by Ubisoft. LEAD is based on another game engine from the company, internally called SCX. “SCX” is a modified version of “Unreal Engine 2.5”. This engine was used in the game “Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory”. It is noteworthy that the developments of another SCX modification, which was used in a later game, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, are not used.

As always, our PC version was ported from the Xbox 360. A number of improvements have been implemented: shadow resolution has been increased, sixteen-fold anti-aliasing with anisotropic filtering is supported, the maximum screen resolution has been raised to 2560×1440 pixels. The main difference from its predecessor is the “SCX” engine, which in turn is based on “Unreal Engine 2.5”, is a significantly modified graphics engine – a component of the game engine that is responsible for rendering (output) images. In addition, optimization was carried out for operation on multi-core processors, and the Havok physics engine was built in.

To display images in Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction, the DirectX 9 API is used. Support for DirectX 11 was not provided. Unfortunately, the game no longer evokes such intense admiration for the graphics as it did in Splinter Cell: Double Agent. But even despite this, the picture is quite nice. The textures don’t always look as detailed as possible, but you still have to take your hat off to the developers who were able to improve Unreal Engine 2.5 so much.

Review: Resource-intensive game

For Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction you will need a Core 2 Duo 2,0 GHz or Athlon 64 x2 4400+ processor and 2 gigabytes of RAM. For a AAA class project, such indulgences have long become rare. So system developers from 2-3 years ago will be able to compete with the game for an acceptable FPS.

Our video cards are tested generally in all different types of screens and you can evaluate how your video card behaves relative to other modern solutions in almost all different types of gaming screens. All video cards were tested with maximum quality graphics settings. Anti-aliasing was not applied – by default, the fast settings were set to high graphics quality. Enabling anti-aliasing resulted in multiple performance losses, especially on ATI cards. Therefore, we should expect optimization from developers or the release of a new version of graphics drivers. And again, for all owners of ATI cards, we recommend updating the drivers to version 10.4 to avoid slowdowns and freezes. The game, as offensive as it may be, just like all box ports, has an internal FPS limit of 60 frames. Console porting makes itself felt a little bit…

To play the game at maximum settings and maximum resolutions, cards of the Radeon HD 3870 or GeForce 9600 GT level will be enough, which can even be considered a huge plus for attractive graphics and exciting gameplay. But again, we are waiting for corrections of performance losses when anti-aliasing is activated.

Conclusion: Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction is the next part of the masterpiece series. Of course, it has its shortcomings and shortcomings, but they are more than compensated for by an excellent plot and system requirements that are quite sane today, although not counting the implementation of anti-aliasing…
