THE GRAFICAL PART |
This subsection of our review highlights the main graphical aspects of this game. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphic settings and the quality of development of the main visual aspects.
SUPPORTED OS AND GRAPHICS API |
Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia is supported on Windows 7/8 and Windows 10.
The priority and main graphics API for BATTLETECH is DirectX 11.
GAME ENGINE |
Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia is based on the Warscape+ game engine. Warscape is a game engine developed by the British company The Creative Assembly for internal use in its Total War games. Warscape is intended for use only on personal computers running Microsoft Windows. The first game to use Warscape was Empire: Total War, the fifth game in the Total War series, and was released on March 3, 2009.
Beginning with 2004’s Rome: Total War, Total War games used the Total War engine, which was used until 2007’s Medieval II: Total War – Kingdoms. After this, it was decided to create a new engine – “Warscape”, the first game on which was “Empire: Total War” in 2009.
During the development of Napoleon: Total War, the engine was “well polished,” Craig Laycock of The Creative Assembly told Armchair General. However, during the development of Total War: Shogun 2, the engine was further redesigned and significantly improved. The main innovation was support for DirectX 11 and some AMD technologies: Eyefinity and CrossFireX.
“Total War: Shogun 2” was promoted by AMD as part of a marketing campaign for HD 6xxx series video cards as a game that actively uses the capabilities of DirectX 11. However, a few days before the game’s release, it became known that it would not contain a DX11 mode. The developers stated that they did not have time to finalize this mode, and it will be released later as a patch. The heavily modified Warscape engine in Total War: Rome 2 made it possible to view exotic cities in the smallest detail, and the new camera makes it possible to observe the battlefield from any angle.
In Total War Warhammer, the developers have moved away from the 32-bit engine and the game runs in 64-bit mode by default, meaning it will no longer be limited by two gigabytes of allocated RAM.
ADVANCED GAME SETTINGS |
Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia has a wide range of graphics settings, typical for all game series total war.
Below we have provided screenshots of the game at various graphics settings, where our readers can see the difference between the minimum and maximum graphics quality settings.
DIFFERENT QUALITY MODES |
The difference in quality is visible to the naked eye.
MLAA smoothes better than MSAA, but it blurs the image somewhat, and its performance advantage is undeniable.
GENERAL VISUALS AND GAME PHYSICS |
The graphics in Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia are similar to previous games in the series, with minor cosmetic changes.
Well, then we will move directly to gaming tests and determine what impact this game has on modern computer hardware.

Our video cards were tested at different screen sizes of 1920×1080, 2560×1600 and 3840×2160 selected maximum graphics quality settings. All settings were set to maximum by default, but MSAA 4X anti-aliasing was replaced with MLAA and the unlimited memory option was enabled.
GPU TEST |
In the video card test, the default resolution is 1920×1080; other resolutions are added and removed manually. You can also remove and add any positions of video cards. You can also select any of our test processors from the list in the drop-down menu, comparing its performance with the given video card tests (by default, the most productive solution is selected).
- Very high
When resolved 1920×1080 an average FPS of 25 frames was shown by video cards of the Radeon R7 370 or GeForce GTX 1050 Ti level. A minimum FPS of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of the Radeon R9 380X or GeForce GTX 960 level. A comfortable average FPS of 60 frames can be provided by solutions of the Radeon R9 Fury X or GeForce GTX 980 Ti level.
When resolved 2560×1440 average FPS of 25 frames showed level video cards Radeon R9 380X or GeForce GTX 1060. A minimum FPS of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of the level of Radeon R9 290X or GeForce GTX 1060. A comfortable average FPS of 60 frames can be provided by solutions of the level Radeon RX Vega 64 or GeForce GTX 1080.
When resolved 3840×2160 an average FPS of 25 frames was shown by video cards of the Radeon RX Vega 56 or GeForce GTX 1070 level. A minimum FPS of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti level.
VIDEO MEMORY CONSUMPTION |
Testing of video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the program MSI Afterburner. The indicator was based on the results on video cards from AMD and NVIDIA with separate screen sizes 1920×1080 and 2560×1440 with different anti-aliasing settings. By default, the graph displays the most current solutions. Other video cards are added and removed from the schedule at the request of the reader.
