War of the Roses – the game belongs to several genres: Strategy, RPG and Action. Developed by the Swedish company Fatshark. The game takes the player back to the XNUMXth century, during the English Civil War, which went down in history as the War of the Roses. The player will have to take one of the sides of two warring factions: Plantagenets – Lancasters and Yorks. The game is in many ways a continuation of the famous Mount & Blade.
The release is scheduled for October 2, 2012.
THE GRAFICAL PART |
This subsection of our review highlights the main graphical aspects of this game. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphic settings and the quality of development of the main visual aspects.
Supported OS and graphics API |
War of the Roses is supported by major Windows operating systems, which include Vista and Windows 7. Other operating systems, including Windows XP, are not currently supported by developers and are unlikely to receive support.
The priority and main graphics API for the PC version is DirectX 11.
Game engine |
The War of the Roses game engine is a product of Fatshark’s own development. The engine was created exclusively for working on a PC, which made it possible to acquire support for DirectX 11. As we see, more and more developers are joining DirectX 11 services…
Unfortunately, we could not find more detailed information about the game engine, except for these press releases.
Advanced Game Settings |
War of the Roses Beta has a very impressive arsenal of graphic settings – we are literally lost from so many graphic functions… To a greater extent, this should help owners of low-power systems – you can flexibly customize the configuration to suit your PC without any problems.
Below we have provided screenshots of the game at various graphics settings, where our readers can see the difference between minimum, medium and high graphics quality settings.

General visual design and game physics |
War of the Roses is a PC-oriented game, so it’s not surprising that the game looks much better than most modern multi-platform projects. In addition to various graphical delights, the game has support for DirectX 11, but support for the already outdated DirectX 9 was not implemented…
The picture is very clear and is not blurred by additional filters that hide graphic holes. The detailing of the characters in War of the Roses is quite good. The physics in the game is conditional, so virtually no major aspect is subject to physical impact.
Well, then we will move directly to gaming tests and determine what impact this game has on modern computer hardware.

GPU test |
All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality using MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. The average FPS was taken as a performance indicator. We did not post a video of the test segment due to a temporary ban until the full release.
Our video cards were tested at different screen sizes of 1680×1050, 1920×1080 and 2560×1600 with ultra-high graphics quality settings War of the Roses Beta. SLI is not supported, but CrossFireX works without problems, showing excellent scalability.
Testing at maximum quality settings 1680×1050
At a resolution of 1680×1050 at maximum settings, an acceptable minimum FPS was shown by video cards of the Radeon HD 6790 or GeForce level GTS 450. The optimal video cards will be Radeon HD 5580 or GeForce GTX 460 SE and higher.
Testing at maximum quality settings 1920×1080
At a resolution of 1920×1080 at maximum settings, video cards of the Radeon HD 5830 or GeForce GTX 460 SE level showed an acceptable FPS. The optimal video cards will be Radeon HD 5850 or GeForce GTX 460 and higher.
Testing at maximum quality settings 2560×1600
At a resolution of 2560×1600 at maximum settings, video cards of the Radeon HD 6970 or GeForce GTX 470 level again showed an acceptable FPS. The optimal video cards will be Radeon HD 7870 or GeForce GTX 480 and higher.
VRAM test |
Testing of video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the program MSI Afterburner. The indicator was based on results on top video cards from AMD and NVIDIA with separate screen sizes 1680×1050, 1920×1080 and 1920×1200.
Testing at maximum memory GPU quality settings
The optimal amount of video memory for War of the Roses is 1280 MB or higher. For ultra-high resolutions you will need about 1,5 gigabytes.
CPU test |
We tested processor dependence on 12 models of basic configurations that are relevant today. The test was carried out in those places where the value of video cards for the game is minimal and its load was less than 99%, this time at a resolution of 1024×768 with maximum graphics quality settings.
Testing at maximum quality settings 1024×768
War of the Roses is largely optimized for 4 computing cores, which will provide optimal gaming comfort compared to 2-core solutions.
RAM test |
Testing of the RAM consumed by the game was carried out by monitoring directly through the Windows task manager. The test was carried out on the basic configuration of Core i 7 [email protected] GHz with 8GB DDR3 2400 MGz pre-installed memory.
Testing at various quality settings
As we can see, with different quality settings, the amount of RAM consumed in War of the Roses is at the same level of 700 megabytes. Thus, for a comfortable game you need to have minimum 2 GB of RAM installed in your PC.
