Developer: Wargaming.net
World of Tanks is a computer game, a client-side massively multiplayer online game in real time in the genre of an arcade tank simulator in the historical setting of World War II, developed by the Belarusian studio Wargaming.net. The developers position the game as an MMO action game with elements of a role-playing game, shooter and strategy. The concept of “World of Tanks” is based on team tank battles in PvP mode.
Update 8.5 has added a new location with an oriental flavor, “Pearl River,” to the list of maps in World of Tanks, and will also delight all fans of light and medium vehicles with new Soviet and German tanks. In addition, maps already familiar to players will be improved, and some parameters of military equipment will also undergo changes.
THE GRAFICAL PART |
This subsection of our review highlights the main graphical aspects of this game. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphic settings and the quality of development of the main visual aspects.
Supported OS and graphics API |
World of Tanks is supported by major Windows operating systems, which include XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. Other operating systems are not currently supported by developers and will not receive support.
The priority and main graphics API for World of Tanks is DirectX 9.
Game engine |
The game is based on the BigWorld game engine, which was developed by Wargaming for use in its own products.
We did not find any more detailed information about the game engine, except for the data listed above…
Advanced Game Settings |
World of Tanks has fairly wide graphical settings, thanks to which we can flexibly manipulate graphical performance. The settings, as before, can be changed and adjusted to almost any modern PC configuration. With the release of the latest update, the graphic settings have not changed at all.
Below we have provided screenshots of the game at various graphics settings, where our readers can see the difference between minimum, medium, high and maximum graphics quality settings.

As we can see, the picture quality between different quality settings changes significantly and at maximum settings, as you would expect, World of Tanks is at its most enjoyable. |
Comparison of anti-aliasing quality |
As we can see, the anti-aliasing settings left a rather mixed impression. On the one hand, all the stairs are removed, and on the other hand, the picture becomes too blurry. Activating anti-aliasing has virtually no effect on performance, and it’s up to you to decide which mode to play in…
General visual design and game physics |
As we managed to notice, after a long acquaintance with the game, different game cards have different effects on the performance of the subsystem, depending on their location design. And one of the main design innovations, as we know, of the latest World of Tanks update is a new map called “Pearl River”.
Therefore, both in terms of review and hardware testing, we focused our attention on this new location. From the visual side, the Pearl River map turned out to be quite well modeled in terms of attractiveness for the user, where open river spaces are in perfect harmony with closed forest spaces.
Of course, the game balance will still have to be significantly polished, but playing in this location is quite interesting. Well, then we will move directly to gaming tests and determine what impact this game has on modern computer hardware.

GPU test |
All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality using MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. The average and minimum FPS were taken as performance indicators. Below is a video of the test segment:
Our video cards were tested at separate screen sizes of 1920×1080 and 2560×1600 at the maximum graphics quality settings allowed by World of Tanks on the card “Pearl River”. Multi-chip configurations from NVIDIA have finally acquired support from the game engine, but AMD can only dream of this implementation at this moment…
Testing at maximum quality settings 1920×1080
At a resolution of 1920×1080 at maximum settings, an acceptable level of performance was shown by video cards of the Radeon HD 5770 level or GeForce GTS 450. The optimal video cards will be Radeon HD 5870 or GeForce GTX 570.
Testing at maximum quality settings 2560×1600
At a resolution of 2560×1600 at maximum settings an acceptable level of performance was shown by video cards of the Radeon HD 7850 level or GeForce GTX 560. The optimal video cards will be Radeon HD 7970GE or GRFORCE GTX TITAN.
Such a low minimum FPS is due to the fact that the load on video cards in aiming mode increases many times, and in some cases can cause users some discomfort…
VRAM test |
Testing of video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the program MSI Afterburner. The indicator was based on results on top video cards from AMD and NVIDIA with separate screen sizes 1920×1080 and 2560×1600 with different anti-aliasing settings.
Testing at maximum memory GPU quality settings
The recommended amount of video memory usage for this game is about 1024 MB for basic graphics quality settings. For ultra resolutions and maximum settings, you will need about 1280-1536 megabytes of video memory.
CPU test |
We tested processor dependence on 19 models of basic configurations that are relevant today. The test was carried out in those places where the value of video cards for the game is minimal and its load was less than 99%, this time at a resolution of 1920×1080 with maximum graphics quality settings. The test was carried out on a completed card “Pearl River”:
Testing at maximum quality settings 1920×1080
As expected, Intel processors showed the best performance in World of Tanks, which is due to better performance per core and weak multi-threaded optimization of the game.
Loading of processor cores at maximum quality settings 1920×1080 Intel%
Loading of processor cores at maximum quality settings 1920×1080 AMD%
World of Tanks, like World of Warplanes, is not able to use more than two processor cores. The game is optimized for dual-core models and the maximum it can use is 1,5 processor cores..
RAM test |
Testing of the RAM consumed by the game was carried out by monitoring directly through the Windows task manager. The test was carried out on the basic configuration of Core i 7 [email protected] GHz with 16GB DDR3 2400 MGz pre-installed memory.
Testing at various quality settings
As we can see, with various basic quality settings, the amount of RAM consumed in World of Tanks ranges from 600-800 megabytes. Thus, for a comfortable game you need to have 2 minimum GB of RAM installed in your PC.
