New RTX-enabled applications

Just one year after the announcement of NVIDIA RTX™ technology at SIGGRAPH 2018, ray tracing has established itself as the new industry standard in design, architecture, gaming, effects, and scientific visualization.

image003

The world's leading developers have already introduced over 40 RTX-enabled apps, enabling tens of millions of users to apply ray tracing and artificial intelligence algorithms. More recently, all these technologies were too resource-intensive for interactive work. The list of these 40 applications includes seven from leading independent developers, which are presented this week at SIGGRAPH.

Ray tracing companies include Pixar, Renault, New Balance, Woods Bagot, and Siemens Healthineers from a wide variety of industries. Leading game engines - Unity and Unreal Engine - support ray tracing with RTX. Visual computing giants such as Adobe, Autodesk, Blackmagic Design, and Dassault Systèmes are also adding support for the technology.

“Designers, artists, hardware manufacturers and software developers around the world have embraced real-time ray tracing and AI acceleration as the new industry standard in design and content creation,” said Greg Estes, vice president of corporate marketing and Developer Programs at NVIDIA. "The power of NVIDIA RTX is available from the RTX Studio laptops used by millions of content creators to the data centers of global corporations, enabling you to create better products and more immersive entertainment even faster."

Ray tracing calculates each photon of light in a scene as it interacts with materials and surfaces. This makes images more accurate and realistic than traditional CG methods. The NVIDIA RTX platform, which includes software tools and hardware-accelerated ray tracing and AI algorithms, enables real-time ray tracing for the first time.

RTX. On: Leading Apps Take Content Creation to New Heights

RTX allows designers to iterate interactively on their product or model and see physically based lighting, shadows and reflections. Entertainment digital artists can apply the same techniques to their animations and visual effects.

RTX technology can also be used in servers for batch rendering of scenes that are difficult to render in real time, or for pre-calculations of "light baking", i.e. modeling how textures will look in certain environments for games and other interactive visualizations. And AI acceleration simplifies noise removal, spatial posing, and more, providing new opportunities for animators and visual artists.

At SIGGRAPH, seven leading developers showcased new NVIDIA RTX-enabled applications, including:

Adobe Substance Painter: RTX ray tracing speeds up baking up to 192x compared to CPU.
Autodesk Flame: RTX Tensor Cores greatly accelerate the new machine learning capabilities of Autodesk Flame v2020.1. Built-in machine learning analysis algorithms help artists isolate, extract, and modify objects in footage, dramatically speeding up visual effects and compositing.
Blender Cycles: NVIDIA OptiX™ 7 with CUDA® greatly increases the speed of the open source renderer.
Dimension 5 D5 Fusion: RTX ray tracing in UE4's implementation allows architects and designers to quickly simulate lighting and shadows just like in real life.
Daz 3D Daz Studio: NVIDIA Iray® allows content creators to assemble scenes with interactive RTX-accelerated ray tracing to quickly bring their creative projects to life and render them at the highest quality.
Foundry MODO: RTX performance with OptiX in a completely redesigned renderer MODO offers much faster rendering speed than CPU.
Luxion KeyShot: RTX-accelerated ray tracing and AI denoising for photorealistic 3D data visualization in product design analysis, marketing, animation, illustration with OptiX in KeyShot 9. These new additions to existing design and content creation
applications offer powerful RTX capabilities and high performance.

Popular applications such as Adobe Dimension CC and Chaos Group V-Ray offer users a smooth, highly realistic experience thanks to RTX technology RT cores. Adobe Substance users will see a performance boost of up to 800% over CPU when using RTX over DXR for light baking.

The latest BlackMagic Design DaVinci Resolve with DaVinci Neural Engine revolutionizes video production with NVIDIA AI libraries and Tensor Cores in NVIDIA RTX GPUs for faster inference.

RTX everywhere

In less than a year, RTX technology began to be applied everywhere. All key 3D design applications in the world will receive RTX support before the end of the year. The entire gaming industry is also involved with its powerful ecosystem, including support for the technology in standard APIs such as DirectX 12 and Vulkan, as well as in leading game engines such as Unity and Unreal Engine.

All major hardware manufacturers have introduced RTX-based systems. Designed for content creators, 27 RTX Studio laptops and mobile workstations offer desktop performance on the go. The new wave of high performance RTX workstations has revolutionized the way millions of designers, artists, researchers and scientists work, enabling them to render photorealistic scenes in real time and apply new AI algorithms.

Equipped with fully optimized software stacks for OptiX RTX rendering, gaming, VR/AR, and professional visualization, NVIDIA RTX servers deliver cinematic-quality graphics enhanced by ray tracing at a fraction of the cost of CPU-based rendering electricity for the same performance.

AMD Radeon VII is discontinued

Resource Cowcotland confirms from its knowledgeable sources that the AMD Radeon VII graphics card was discontinued last month. Stores are selling the remaining units, and apparently Radeon VII cards will no longer be made.

Radeon VII is AMD's first 7nm Vega 20 graphics card with 3840 stream processors. The Radeon VII was also AMD's first with 16 GB of memory for the consumer market.

Perhaps AMD is preparing its new top solution, which will replace the Radeon VII, in the face of the Radeon RX 5800 or the Radeon RX 5900, based on the Navi architecture.

NVIDIA FRAMEVIEW is a new application for assessing the performance and power consumption of the GPU

Today, NVIDIA FrameView graphics card performance and power consumption evaluation application became available to users. Video cards are usually bought with the expectation that they will provide excellent performance in their class within 2-3 years. Therefore, it is important that video card benchmarks are available at any time and reveal all the basic parameters: frame rate, frame time, power consumption, performance per watt, etc. Until now, no tool or application has been able to produce such data with high accuracy. That's why we created the FrameView application, which every user can download and use for free.

NVIDIA FRAMEVIEW

FrameView can receive data from all major APIs and almost all games, thanks to support for DirectX 9, 10, 11 and 12, OpenGL, Vulkan and Universal Windows Platform (UWP).

The application hardly affects performance during tests, and the built-in overlay allows you to track performance and statistics during gameplay. The application is manufacturer independent and allows you to collect detailed comparative data. With one exception: AMD's GPU Power Consumption API returns some kind of average between chip and board power consumption instead of the real value. Therefore, you must contact AMD for exact values.

If you want to monitor real-time GPU performance and power consumption in games, then FrameView will allow you to do this with a higher degree of accuracy than many other tools and algorithms.
