This subsection of our review highlights the main graphical aspects of this game. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphic settings and the quality of development of the main visual aspects.

GAME ENGINE

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III game engine is the subject of heated debate among the gaming community. On the one hand, this is evidence that developers are trying to keep up with the times, adapting the engine to the latest gaming hardware. On the other hand, many players and critics argue that the changes to the IW engine are not radical enough and do not reflect the potential of modern technology.

Since its first use in Call of Duty 2, the IW engine has been a symbol of technological advancement in the series. However, despite numerous updates, some believe that the engine is outdated and requires a major overhaul to meet current visualization and physics standards in the gaming industry.

In Modern Warfare III, the developers tried to improve the visual quality, but this led to some compromises in performance, especially on older platforms. Players encountered optimization problems, which caused irritation and questioned the value of ongoing engine updates.

Ultimately, Modern Warfare III, despite its technological advances, has faced criticism that highlights the gap between player expectations and reality. This calls into question the future of the IW engine and how the developers plan to develop it further.

DIFFERENT QUALITY MODES

Graphics settings in "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare" significantly affect game performance and image quality. At minimum settings, options such as Ambient Occlusion (AO) and Anti-Aliasing (AA) are either disabled or set to their simplest settings. For example, the basic AA option, SMAA 1X, does not include a timing component, which can result in flicker and sparkle on moving elements. Without AO, the game loses additional shadows and depth, and scenes appear flatter and less realistic.

At maximum settings, enabling options such as GTAO for AO adds shadows to both dynamic and static elements of the game, greatly improving image quality with little performance cost. More advanced forms of AA, such as SMAA T2X or Filmic SMAA T2X, provide a much smoother image by eliminating temporary anti-aliasing, although they introduce a slight blur that can be corrected by adjusting the Filmic Strength setting.

Other settings, such as bullet trails, shadow and sunlight caching, have a smaller impact on performance but can improve realism and smoothness of the game. Depth of Field (DoF) adds a cinematic effect by selectively blurring parts of the scene, improving visual storytelling at the cost of losing just a few frames per second.

Ray tracing, which improves shadows and lighting, is another high-level tweak that greatly improves realism and immersion in the game. It adds precise shadow detail and natural lighting effects, such as softening shadows in the distance, that traditional shadow maps cannot achieve. However, it requires a GPU capable of ray tracing and can have a significant impact on performance.

In general, maximum settings offer a richer, more immersive experience, while minimum settings prioritize performance, which may be necessary on lower-spec systems​.

All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality using MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. Below is a video of the test segment:

In the video card test, the default resolution is 1920x1080; other resolutions are added and removed manually. You can also remove and add any positions of video cards. You can also select any of our test processors from the list in the drop-down menu, comparing its performance with the given video card tests (by default, the most productive solution is selected). The test is carried out on the most powerful CPU in this game and is scaled to other processors, taking into account their testing on NVIDIA and AMD video cards.

Testing of video memory consumed by the game was carried out by  MSI Afterburner. The indicator was based on results on video cards from AMD and NVIDIA at resolutions of  1920x1080, 2560x1440 and 3840x2160 with various anti-aliasing settings. By default, the graph displays the most current solutions. Other video cards are added and removed from the chart at the request of the reader.
