BASIC GAME INFORMATION

As part of our annual graphics card performance testing in 2023, we will focus on analyzing gaming performance using the highest available graphics quality for each game. This year, Core VRAM and RAM tests, as well as upscales, will not be taken into account. THE GRAFICAL PART

This subsection of our review highlights the main graphical aspects of this game. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphic settings and the quality of development of the main visual aspects.

GAME ENGINE

"Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart" is a game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 5. As a sequel to the Ratchet & Clank series, the game was announced in June 2020 during the "The Future of Gaming" presentation for PS5.

1. Development history

As always, the history of game development begins with its origins in the minds of the developers. Insomniac Games already had experience with the Ratchet & Clank franchise, having created several successful games before. After the success of "Ratchet & Clank" in 2016, the team began to think about the next step.

The main idea for "Rift Apart" arose after demonstrating the technological capabilities of the PS5. In particular, the SSD drive of the new console made it possible to quickly change game worlds, which became a key feature of “Rift Apart”. This became the starting point for developing the story and gameplay.

During the development process, the team faced a number of challenges. One of them was the need to adapt the game engine to take advantage of the PS5's capabilities, including the SSD, graphics chip and DualSense controller. Another challenge was the development of a new character, Lombax Rivet, which required careful work by the designers and writers.

2. Game engine

"Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart" was developed on an updated version of the Insomniac Engine, which was adapted for PS5. Engineers from Insomniac have done significant work to optimize the engine for the new console.

One of the key features of the PS5 is its SSD storage, which allows you to load data much faster than a regular hard drive. This made it possible to instantly switch between game worlds, which became a key feature of the game. This required changing the way data was loaded and stored to provide unprecedented speed.

In addition, the Insomniac Engine has been adapted to use the new PS5 graphics chip, creating an even more detailed and realistic world. The game uses ray tracing technology to display realistic light and reflections, as well as dynamic resolution to ensure stable frame rates.

Finally, Insomniac used the new capabilities of the DualSense controller to create a more immersive experience in the game. By using haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, they were able to give players a more tangible experience when interacting with the game world.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart confidently captured the hearts of fans on PlayStation 5, thanks to stunning graphics, dynamic gameplay and exquisite use of the PS5 SSD to instantly change worlds. And now, the game has come to a new platform - PC, which promises serious changes and additional features.

Features of the PC version of the game

The game was originally designed to take advantage of the unique capabilities of the PS5, including superior ray tracing, exceptional loading speeds thanks to the SSD, and innovative features of the DualSense controller. However, like any game coming to PC, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is expected to receive a number of improvements and options specific to that platform.

Ray tracing and video card support : Nixxes Software is actively working on ray tracing support for AMD video cards. The reasons for the lack of this support at the time of release are not specified, but it may be due to technical difficulties or differences in hardware architecture. At the same time, users of NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics accelerators will be able to use ray tracing immediately after release, and will also have access to proprietary NVIDIA technologies, including DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling), Reflex (reduces system latency in games) and RTX IO (accelerates loading and decoding textures using the GPU).

All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality using MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. Below is a video of the test segment:

Our video cards were tested at resolutions of 1920x1080 , 2560x1440 and 3840x2160 with maximum graphics quality settings.

GPU TEST

In the video card test, the default resolution is 1920x1080; other resolutions are added and removed manually. You can also remove and add any positions of video cards. You can also select any of our test processors from the list in the drop-down menu, comparing its performance with the given video card tests (by default, the most productive solution is selected). The test is carried out on the most powerful CPU in this game and is scaled to other processors, taking into account their testing on NVIDIA and AMD video cards.

Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart: Test GPU

At a resolution of 1920x1080, an average FPS of 25 frames was shown by video cards of the Radeon RX 6700 or GeForce RTX 2070 level . A minimum FPS of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of the Radeon RX 6700 or GeForce RTX 3070 level . A comfortable average FPS of 60 frames can be provided by the adeon RX 6900 XT or GeForce RTX 4070 solutions .

At a resolution of 2560x1440, an average FPS of 25 frames was shown by video cards of the adeon RX 6800 or GeForce RTX 3060 level . A minimum FPS of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of the adeon RX 6800 or GeForce RTX 4060 Ti level . A comfortable average FPS of 60 frames can be provided by GeForce RTX 3080 solutions.

At a resolution of 3840x2160, an average FPS of 25 frames was shown by video cards of the Radeon RX 7900 XT or GeForce RTX 3080 level . A minimum FPS of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of the Radeon RX 7900 XT or GeForce RTX 4080 level .

CPU TEST

Testing was carried out at a resolution of 1920x1080. In the processor test, you can remove or add any processor positions. You can also select any tested video card from the list in the drop-down menu, comparing its performance with the given processor test results (by default, the most productive solution from NVIDIA is selected). Testing takes place on the most powerful NVIDIA and AMD video cards and scales to low-end models.

Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart: Test CPU

When using NVIDIA video cards, Ryzen 3 3100 or Core i 3 10100 processors showed an acceptable rate of at least 25 frames per second , and solutions at the Ryzen 5 3600 or Core i 5 10600 level can provide an FPS rate of at least 60 frames per second .

When using AM D video cards, Ryzen 3 3100 or Core i 3 10100 processors showed an acceptable rate of at least 25 frames per second , and solutions at the Ryzen 5 3600 or Core i 3 10100 level can provide an FPS rate of at least 60 frames per second .
