The Chronicles Of Riddick

The game takes place in a world familiar to fans of sci-fi action movies based on two Hollywood blockbusters. The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay is the prequel to the films Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick from Universal Pictures.

The Chronicles Of Riddick

The textures in the game have quite a decent resolution (and this despite the widespread use of normal maps), are realistic and captivate with their detail. The lighting is implemented using the famous stencil buffer shadows a la Doom 3, the character models have a fair amount of polygons spent on the character models, they are well animated and covered with high-quality textures, their faces are almost never repeated and are burdened with rather tolerable animation (although it is far from the inimitable Half- life 2). The Swedes managed to realize all this in two years, keeping the fps bar on my not very modern system at 45 fps min at maximum detail.

The Chronicles of Riddick engine creates extremely believable rooms, guaranteeing the "presence" effect in a gloomy, old, cracked dungeon of alloys and concrete. The only thing he fails to do is open spaces. I remember a long time ago, speaking about Doom 3, I noticed that these very open spaces are extremely difficult to implement on the ID engine. There are no open spaces in Escape from Butcher Bay. However, in a game entirely dedicated to escaping from prison, the lack of open spaces cannot be considered a disadvantage.

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was one of the first games to use normal mapping (first introduced in Doom 3), which makes textures more voluminous and realistic. The game also uses soft shadows, making them more realistic than Doom 3.
