240 Million Computers at Risk of Disposal as Microsoft Ends Support for Windows 10

According to a recent report by Canalys Research, Microsoft's decision to end support for the Windows 10 operating system could lead to significant environmental repercussions. Approximately 240 million personal computers worldwide are at risk of becoming obsolete, exacerbating the already critical issue of electronic waste. The weight of these computers is equivalent to about 320,000 cars, highlighting the massive scale of the potential environmental impact.

Windows 10

The situation is worsened by Microsoft's plan to stop security updates for Windows 10 by October 2025. While the company promises to release security patches until October 2028, this service will only be available to subscription users. This decision threatens the safety and functionality of millions of computers that could otherwise remain operational for many years after the end of official support.

Analysts emphasize that many of these computers could technically remain functional for years following the cessation of OS support. However, the lack of security updates will significantly reduce the demand for such devices. This leads to additional issues associated with the disposal of electronic components, weighing approximately 480 million kilograms.

Thus, Microsoft's current policy regarding Windows 10 not only raises concerns about user data security but also poses a serious threat to the environment. The decision to cease support for one of the world's most popular operating systems calls for a more responsible approach to the disposal and recycling of electronic waste.
