We tested Gray Zone Warfare at the highest graphics settings, on video cards from the GEFORCE RTX and RADEON RX series. Also, during the tests we conducted, we assessed the performance and quality of the graphic display of the game itself.

THE GRAFICAL PART

This subsection of our review highlights the main graphical aspects of this game. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphic settings and the quality of development of the main visual aspects.

SUPPORTED OS AND GRAPHICS API

Gray Zone Warfare is supported on Windows 10/11.

The preferred and primary graphics API for Gray Zone Warfare is DX12 .

GAME ENGINE

History of the development of the game Gray Zone Warfare

Gray Zone Warfare is a tactical strategy game inspired by modern military conflicts and theories of hybrid warfare. Development of the game began with the idea of creating a realistic simulator that would allow players to experience the complexities and subtleties of conflict in the so-called "gray zone" - the space between peace and war, where unclear and indirect methods of combat are used.

GZWClientSteam Win64 Shipping 2024 04 30 17 53 07 047

The project started at the beginning of 2020, when a small team of enthusiasts, led by an experienced video game developer, gathered to implement this ambitious idea. The developers conducted extensive research, including studies of military doctrine, analysis of modern military conflicts, and interviews with military experts, to create a game that would reflect real-life strategic and tactical challenges.

Particular attention was paid to creating game mechanisms that would allow players to use various methods of warfare, including cyber attacks, psychological warfare, economic pressure and direct military operations. This approach required developers to be innovative in terms of programming and gameplay design.

GZWClientSteam Win64 Shipping 2024 04 30 17 53 38 000

By the end of 2022, Gray Zone Warfare had reached the stage of active beta testing with the participation of the community, which allowed the developers to receive valuable feedback and refine the game before the official release. This process was key to optimizing gameplay and balance, ensuring that the final game would provide players with a deep and feature-rich gaming experience.

Graphics in Gray Zone Warfare

The graphic design of Gray Zone Warfare is designed to emphasize the seriousness and realism of modern military themes. The graphics strive for detail and precision, which is evident in everything from military vehicle simulations to combat renderings and environmental visual effects.

GZWClientSteam Win64 Shipping 2024 04 30 17 53 24 639

To achieve a high level of detail, photorealistic rendering technology was used, which allows for the creation of high-quality textures and complex lighting. This is especially noticeable in the urban battle scenes, where every element, be it a building or a street, is recreated with a high degree of accuracy.

A dynamic weather system and time of day changes add additional depth to the game, influencing players' tactical decisions. For example, rain or fog can affect visibility and accuracy, requiring players to adapt their strategies to changing conditions.

Game engine Gray Zone Warfare

Unreal Engine was chosen to develop Gray Zone Warfare , known for its power and flexibility in creating complex interactive systems. This engine allowed developers to implement complex interaction and artificial intelligence mechanics that are key to simulating unconventional military operations and strategies typical of gray zone wars.

GZWClientSteam Win64 Shipping 2024 04 30 17 54 21 550

Unreal Engine also provided developers with powerful tools to create realistic visual and audio effects, greatly improving the quality and immersion of the game. Supported by high-performance processing and graphics, the game offers complex and realistic combat scenarios that dynamically change depending on the actions and decisions of the player.

The use of this engine provides high performance and optimization, which allows the game to run efficiently on various platforms, including powerful gaming PCs and the latest generation consoles. This makes Gray Zone Warfare accessible to a wide audience of players looking to experience the unique challenges and strategies of hybrid warfare.

DIFFERENT QUALITY MODES

In-game graphics settings at minimum reduce the level of detail and disable various graphics functions to improve performance, while settings at maximum enable all possible effects, providing the highest quality and detail of the image.

MSI Afterburner

All video cards were tested at maximum graphics quality using MSI Afterburner. The purpose of the test is to determine how video cards from different manufacturers behave under the same conditions. Below is a video of the test segment:

Our video cards were tested at resolutions of 1920x1080 , 2560x1440 and 3840x2160 with maximum graphics quality settings.

In the video card test, the default resolution is 1920x1080; other resolutions are added and removed manually. You can also remove and add any positions of video cards. You can also select any of our test processors from the list in the drop-down menu, comparing its performance with the given video card tests (by default, the most productive solution is selected). The test is carried out on the most powerful CPU in this game and is scaled to other processors, taking into account their testing on NVIDIA and AMD video cards.
