GAME ENGINE |
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is being developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 5 gaming system. The game is directed by Creative Director Marcus Smith and Game Director Mike Daly. The game was announced on June 11, 2020 at Sony's PlayStation 5 presentation. At the opening of Gamescom on August 27, 2020, Insomniac Games hosted a 7-minute gameplay demo of the game as part of the PlayStation 5 promotional campaign. On April 26, 2021, at the State of Play presentation, Sony unveiled a large 16-minute gameplay trailer.
The game uses the power of the DualSense controller, the Tempest Engine audio engine, and dedicated ray tracing hardware to support correspondingly enhanced haptic feedback, 3D spatial audio, and real-time ray tracing effects. Thanks to increased processing power and the inclusion of a dedicated SSD in the PlayStation 5, the game features a greater variety of NPCs, enemies, visuals, and objects in game scenes. Improvements in game design are aimed at significantly reducing loading times when transitioning between worlds, which should provide a seamless and immersive gaming experience.
Marcus Smith, creative director of Insomniac Games, in an interview with GamesRadar+, responded to a question about making workflows easier with the specially designed PS5 SSD, stating that "the game uses dimensions and spatial rifts, and this would not be possible without the PlayStation 5 SSD", adding further, that it is “surprisingly fast. It allows us to create worlds and move players from one place to another almost instantly. It's an incredible change to the game: we can now make gameplay where you're in one world and the next moment you're in another."
