SIGGRAPH 2017: AMD Introduces Radeon RX Vega, World's Most Powerful Sub-$400 Graphics Card, Breaks 1TB VRAM Barrier with Radeon Pro SSG

At the annual Capsaicin SIGGRAPH event in Los Angeles, AMD strengthened its position in the high-end PC market with new Ryzen Threadripper processors and "Vega" GPUs. Innovations allow you to play modern games in a new way and work on content creation today and tomorrow.

Key messages from the eventful event included:

  • Launch of the Radeon RX Vega GPU family  , which will go on sale on August 14th. The series includes three new products based on the "Vega" architecture. They fundamentally change the gameplay and work on content creation.

    • With 64 compute units, the Radeon RX Vega 64 Liquid Cooled Edition graphics chip is the most powerful Radeon graphics card ever made.
    • Radeon RX Vega 64 also comes with air cooling 
    • The Radeon RX Vega 56 graphics card is available for a MSRP of $399 US and the Radeon RX 64 for a MSRP of $499 US.
  • The Radeon Pro WX 9100 workstation graphics card delivers up to 12.3 Teraflops of peak single precision performance. It is designed for media tasks and entertainment, development and production processes.
  • The world's first graphics card to break the terabyte video memory barrier, the AMD  Radeon Pro SSG comes with 2TB of video memory for crisp performance and real-time 8K video editing.
  • Starting August 10 , 16- and 12-core Ryzen Threadripper processors will go on sale, which are already open for pre-order.
  • Starting August 31, the previously unannounced 8-core Ryzen Threadripper processor will be available.
  • The AMD Studios project has been announced  , AMD's Hollywood initiative to develop entertainment technology, hardware and software for the ever-increasing needs of today's cinema.
  • Introduced the new platform  P47 , developed together with Inventec. This 2U form factor parallel computing solution has been designed to handle a range of applications from graphical visualization to AI building.

    • The 16-core, 32-thread Ryzen Threadripper 1950X with a base clock of 3.4GHz and a boost clock of 4.0GHz is available for pre-order now for a suggested price of $999.
    • The 12-core, 24-thread Ryzen Threadripper 1920X with a base frequency of 3.5 GHz and an increased frequency of 4.0 GHz is available for pre-order for a suggested price of $799.
    • The new 8-core, 16-thread Ryzen Threadripper 1900X with a base frequency of 3.8 GHz and an increased frequency of 4.0 GHz will go on sale on August 31 for a suggested price of $549.

AMD Changes Gaming Enthusiast Expectations with Radeon RX Vega and Radeon Packs

  • The Radeon RX Vega graphics card represents the most sophisticated GPU architecture designed for gaming enthusiasts. It delivers peak performance up to 13.7 Teraflops and can power even the most demanding VR games and applications.
  • The Radeon RX Vega 56 discrete graphics card is available for a MSRP of $399 US, while the Radeon RX 64 is available for a MSRP of $499 US.
  • AMD also unveiled the Radeon Pack, designed to give gamers access to the technology they need most, as well as making available upgrades to enable 4K 60fps gaming. Radeon Packs offer $200 off the Samsung CF791 FreeSync Curved 34” Monitor and $100 off select Ryzen™ 7 1800X processors and X370 motherboards, i.e. $300 total savings on equipment. With Radeon RX Vega graphics cards, the discount applies to Samsung monitors with Radeon Freesync, as well as Ryzen bundles that include a processor and motherboard. In select regions, each Radeon Pack also includes two highly anticipated games: Wolfenstein® II: The New Colossus ™ and Prey® for free, with an estimated price of around $120.
    • The Radeon Red Pack  includes the air-cooled Radeon RX Vega 56 for a MSRP of $499 for the entire package.
    • The Radeon Black Pack  includes the air-cooled Radeon RX Vega 64 for a suggested retail price of $599 for the entire package.

  • Support for innovative graphics technologies, including Rapid Packed Math, High Bandwidth Cache Controller, as well as new Geometry and Pixel engines, will help improve performance in games that support low-level APIs such as DirectX 12 and Vulkan. This gives developers more flexibility and allows them to design the most complex and beautiful virtual worlds.

  • A single rack of the Inventec P47 system delivers performance in excess of 1 Petaflops with full 32-bit precision, delivering an astounding 30 GFlops/Watt efficiency - over 25% advantage over individual competitive supercomputing platforms.
  • A rack contains more cores, threads, compute modules, I/O ports, and memory channels simultaneously than any other similar system configuration ever created before.
  • The P47 is expected to be available from Inventec and main distributor AMAX in Q4 this year.
