Radeon HD 4670

pb1220967488
The budget graphics chip RV730 received only 320 stream processors in combination with 32 texture units.

It's easy to see that in terms of the number of computing units, the new entry-level chip has caught up with the former high-end RV670, which also has 320 universal shader processors, but fewer texture units. With such equality in computing power, the new chip of the seventh series has only a 128-bit memory controller, but also less power consumption, so video cards based on it can easily do without an additional power connector and without bulky cooling systems.

Such an interesting architectural confrontation between the new and old chips makes it necessary to compare new video cards with models based on the old RV670 core. That is what we will do in this article. We'll compare the new Radeon HD 4670 with the Radeon HD 3850 and see if the 256-bit memory bus will help the older card win. It's really worth noting here that in the same price category with the budget Radeon HD 4670, so far there are only "simplified" Radeon HD 3850 on slower DDR2 memory. After RV 670 cards were pushed back to the budget class, such hybrids with slow memory began to be produced in large numbers by different manufacturers. In principle, in combination with a wider memory controller bus, this still gives about the same bandwidth as the Radeon HD 4670 with faster DDR3.

The new budget graphics card Radeon HD 4670 is certainly a success. It demonstrates an excellent level of performance, often outperforming the Radeon HD 3850 DDR2. At the same time, the card does not require an additional power supply, which means that this will allow the user to get by with a weaker power supply. For the segment of 128-bit graphics solutions, this is generally a huge leap, because in fact this is a video accelerator with a core similar in power to the former high-end AMD RV670 chip. And the video card still has overclocking potential, which allows you to win about 10% more performance if you wish.
