This video card was born due to a fairly common operation - disabling part of the computing units of the RV770 controller, originally developed for Radeon HD 4870 and 4850 video cards. Note that the flexible microarchitecture of current 3D accelerators allows you to cut off some branches without any problems pipeline, texturing units, memory controllers, data post-processing / writing units (ROP) and other components, which leads to a decrease in performance (this is a minus) and power consumption (this is a plus). It is rumored that the selective shutdown of blocks is beneficial from the point of view of cost: microcircuits with a few local defects can be put into production by blocking those blocks in which defects have formed. In fact, this is not the only reason for the "cutting" of microcircuits, and our case can be cited as an example. The release of RV770 microcircuits was very successful from the very beginning, and the creation of a cut-down version was required to justify the lower price of the Radeon HD 4830 video card. That is, the card did not appear for the sake of using defective chips, but vice versa - the chip appeared for the sake of an "intermediate" video card.

On the Radeon HD 4830, the RV770 graphics controller is installed, truncated in such a way that its performance when executing shaders is reduced by 20%. To do this, 2 out of 10 shader processor units are disabled, each of which consists of 16 superscalar ALUs. To preserve the internal balance, the number of active texturing modules was proportionally reduced - from 40 to 32. The clock frequency of the chip was also reduced, albeit slightly (compared to the Radeon HD 4850). At the same time, what is important, the video card retains the number of ROPs and memory controllers, as well as a 256-bit memory bus.
