Forspoken: PC Performance Benchmarks for Graphics Cards and Processors 2023
BASIC GAME INFORMATION |
As part of our annual graphics card performance testing in 2023, we will focus on analyzing gaming performance using the highest available graphics quality for each game. This year, Core VRAM and RAM tests, as well as upscales, will not be taken into account. Our goal is to identify the most powerful graphics cards and determine their hierarchical positions in the context of games in 2023. This will be a comprehensive gaming benchmark focused on assessing real-world performance under the most demanding gaming conditions.
We continue our annual review cycle, which will culminate in the final determination of the fastest and most optimal gaming solutions among video cards for games released in 2023. In this review we focus on testing the game Forspoken.

This subsection of our review highlights the main graphical aspects of this game. Particular attention is paid to the version of the graphics engine used, the version of the API used, graphic settings and the quality of development of the main visual aspects.

GAME ENGINE |
Luminous Engine is a game engine developed by the Japanese company Square Enix for internal use. The engine was created as a cross-platform one - compatible with IBM PC-compatible computers running Microsoft Windows and game consoles. Announced in 2010, the Luminous Engine replaced the studio's previous internal engines, including Crystal Tools, which had become outdated by the time Final Fantasy XIII-2 was developed, and the company feared that its continued use would complicate the expected transition to the eighth generation of gaming systems. The new engine was supposed to significantly increase the efficiency and speed of developing computer games of various genres.
The only game released using the Luminous Engine was Final Fantasy XV. The company has also released tech demos showing off the engine's capabilities - Agni's Philosophy in 2012 and Witch Chapter 0 in 2015. In 2018, Square Enix established an internal studio, Luminous Productions, specifically to develop AAA games using the Luminous Engine.
One of the main priorities when developing Luminous Studio was multiplatform (cross-platform), as a result of which the engine supports any platform that has programmable shaders.
Luminous Studio supports many features for editing and processing game content and assets: visual editing, real-time editing, collaborative parallel editing, automatic assembly and testing of objects, asset management system, task management, etc.
Graphics engine
The graphics engine used in the PC version of Luminous Studio has native support for Direct3D 11, including tessellation. In addition, many other technologies are supported, including various ones, including diffuse, real-time reflections, refraction and ray distortion. It is stated that the graphics engine will feature “strikingly realistic visual fidelity.”
Animation engine
The Luminous Studio development team pays great attention to character animation. They believe that animation is one of the most important components of creating photorealistic graphics, and unnatural animation stands out noticeably and disrupts photorealism. Particular attention is paid to procedural animation, in particular, methods such as inverse kinematics for the whole body, etc.
Luminous Studio will use a combination of pre-recorded motion capture animation along with procedurally generated animation. A special database contains many pre-recorded animations for many movements and actions (for example, walking or swinging a sword). When creating a character animation, the most relevant animation entries are retrieved from the database and adjusted based on the character's current conditions and/or environment. The developers gave several examples, the first describes the imposition of a procedural approach on a recorded walking animation in the case of a character walking on an uneven surface. In the following example, the animation engine could change a pre-recorded sword swinging animation depending on how heavy the sword is, or combine the walking and sword swinging animations as the character swings it in motion.
Physics engine
The physics engine included in Luminous Studio supports the simulation of tissues and liquids.
Gaming AI
Engine developers pay great attention to gaming artificial intelligence. According to Luminous Studio's lead developer and game AI researcher Yoichiro Miyake, previous AI engines are based on reactive loops, while here the developers want to implement a new scalable AI that can recognize game scenes. Miyake gave an example in which the level editor communicates with the AI, and the latter can recognize its terrain and structures, intelligently using them when fighting a human player. If these algorithms can be implemented, then such AI will become universal, suitable for games of many genres. According to Miyake, the developers are striving to create an AI that will be closely connected with other subsystems of the engine, and not placed in a separate independent module. Also an important priority is the creation of scalable AI that can be used both in casual games for low-power portable consoles and in “big” games for the next generation of consoles.

In the video card test, the default resolution is 1920x1080; other resolutions are added and removed manually. You can also remove and add any positions of video cards. You can also select any of our test processors from the list in the drop-down menu, comparing its performance with the given video card tests (by default, the most productive solution is selected). The test is carried out on the most powerful CPU in this game and is scaled to other processors, taking into account their testing on NVIDIA and AMD video cards.
At a resolution of 1920x1080, an average FPS of 25 frames was shown by video cards of the Radeon RX 6600 or GeForce RTX 2060 level . A minimum FPS of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of the Radeon RX 6600 or GeForce RTX 2060 level . A comfortable average FPS of 60 frames can be provided by the adeon RX 6800 or GeForce RTX 4070 solutions .
At a resolution of 2560x1440, an average FPS of 25 frames was shown by video cards of the adeon RX 6600 XT or GeForce RTX 2060 level . A minimum FPS of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of the adeon RX 6700 or GeForce RTX 2060 level . A comfortable average FPS of 60 frames can be provided by the Radeon RX 7900 XT or GeForce RTX 4070 Ti solutions.
At a resolution of 3840x2160, an average FPS of 25 frames was shown by video cards of the Radeon RX 6800 or GeForce RTX 2080 Ti level . A minimum FPS of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of the Radeon RX 6800 XT or GeForce RTX 4070 level .
CPU TEST |
Testing was carried out at a resolution of 1920x1080. In the processor test, you can remove or add any processor positions. You can also select any tested video card from the list in the drop-down menu, comparing its performance with the given processor test results (by default, the most productive solution from NVIDIA is selected). Testing takes place on the most powerful NVIDIA and AMD video cards and scales to low-end models.
When using NVIDIA video cards, Ryzen 3 3100 or Core i 3 10100 processors showed an acceptable rate of at least 25 frames per second , and solutions at the Ryzen 5 3600 or Core i 3 10100 level can provide an FPS rate of at least 60 frames per second .
When using AM D video cards, Ryzen 3 3100 or Core i 3 10100 processors showed an acceptable rate of at least 25 frames per second , and solutions at the Ryzen 3 3300 or Core i 3 10100 level can provide an FPS rate of at least 60 frames per second .
