Everspace 2 development history

Everspace 2 was announced by Rockfish Games in August 2019. The game is a continuation of the original Everspace, but with significant changes to the game mechanics and structure. Unlike the first part, which was a space shooter with roguelike elements, Everspace 2 has transformed into an open space RPG with shooter elements and a rich narrative.

A key development was the successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter at the end of 2019, which raised over €500,000. These funds helped finance the development of the game and add more content to it. The game was originally supposed to be released in December 2020, but the release was delayed until January 2021 to avoid competition with Cyberpunk 2077.

During the development process, special attention was paid to creating a large-scale open world with more than 100 hand-crafted locations, each of which offers unique quests and challenges. This was made possible through the use of Unreal Engine, which allowed developers to create a detailed and interconnected space world.

Graphically, Everspace 2 greatly advances the capabilities of its predecessor, using the latest advances in visualization. The game is developed on the Unreal Engine, which allows you to create detailed and visually impressive scenes of space battles and planetary landscapes.

The game pays special attention to dynamic lighting and particle effects, which makes space battles spectacular and emotionally rich. The engine allowed for the integration of complex game mechanics, such as a combat system, ship control, space exploration, and interaction with various objects within the game.

A feature of the use of Unreal Engine in Everspace 2 is performance optimization, which allows the game to run effectively on various platforms without significant loss of image quality. This is especially important for the smoothness and dynamics of gameplay, especially during intense space battles.

In the spring of 2024, Rockfish Games announced that the game will be moving to Unreal Engine 5, which will improve performance and simplify the process of adding new content in the future. Despite the engine update, the developers decided not to implement Nanite and Lumen technologies from Unreal Engine, since the existing solutions in the game are already optimized better than these innovations.

DIFFERENT QUALITY MODES

Everspace 2, developed on Unreal Engine, recently integrated Lumen technology in one of its latest updates. Lumen is a fully dynamic global illumination solution that instantly responds to changes in scene and lighting, delivering more realistic and dynamic lighting and reflections in games developed with Unreal Engine 5.

There was initially some confusion regarding the implementation of Lumen in Everspace 2, as previous updates and developer statements suggested that the game would not support Lumen, preferring their optimized solutions. However, recent patch notes from the game point to Lumen integration, improving lighting and overall visual fidelity, which aligns with Unreal Engine 5's ability to handle expansive space environments and detailed interiors seamlessly.

In the video card test, the default resolution is 1920x1080; other resolutions are added and removed manually. You can also remove and add any positions of video cards. You can also select any of our test processors from the list in the drop-down menu, comparing its performance with the given video card tests (by default, the most productive solution is selected). The test is carried out on the most powerful CPU in this game and is scaled to other processors, taking into account their testing on NVIDIA and AMD video cards.

 At a resolution of 1920x1080, an average FPS of 25 frames was shown by video cards of the Radeon RX 6600 or GeForce RTX 2060 level .  A minimum FPS of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of the Radeon RX 6600 or GeForce RTX 2060 level . A comfortable average FPS of 60 frames can be provided by Radeon RX 6700 XT or GeForce RTX 2060 solutions .

At a resolution of 1920x1080, an average FPS of 25 frames was shown by video cards of the Radeon RX 660 or GeForce RTX 2060 level .  A minimum FPS of at least 25 frames can be provided by video cards of the Radeon RX 6700 or GeForce RTX 2060 level . Testing of video memory consumed by the game was carried out by  MSI Afterburner. The indicator was based on results on video cards from AMD and NVIDIA at resolutions of  1920x1080, 2560x1440 and 3840x2160 with various anti-aliasing settings. By default, the graph displays the most current solutions. Other video cards are added and removed from the chart at the request of the reader.

The test was carried out on the basic configuration of Core i 9 13900K with 32 GB DDR5 6400 MHz pre-installed memory. All used RAM was taken as an indicator. The RAM test for the entire system was carried out on various video cards without launching third-party applications (browsers, etc.). In the graphics, you can add and remove any resolutions and video cards as desired.
