Development

Development of Watch Dogs: Legion began immediately after the release of Watch Dogs 2. Making the game required a lot of effort on Ubisoft's part to implement the "Play as Anyone" technology. Watch Dogs: Legion is powered by the Disrupt game engine, developed specifically for the Watch Dogs series. Disrupt provides high-quality graphics, physics and animation, as well as a detailed open world.

However, one of the most remarkable technologies used in the game is ray tracing. This is a state of the art graphics technology that provides very realistic lighting, reflections and shadows by simulating the path that light rays take through the game scene. In Legion, this is especially noticeable in the detailing of urban environments, such as the wet cobbled streets of London, which reflect ambient lights and buildings.

Game engine

Legion's Disrupt Engine is a powerful and versatile platform that allows developers to create rich and detailed virtual environments. It supports complex animations, including those used to implement "Play as Anyone" mechanics, as well as advanced lighting technologies, including ray tracing.

The Disrupt Engine allows Ubisoft developers to create huge urban environments with detailed graphics and a complex physics system. Ray tracing

Ray tracing is a technology that allows you to create realistic lighting, reflections and shadows in computer graphics. Instead of traditional methods that use simplified models to calculate lighting effects, ray tracing traces the path of each ray of light in a scene, resulting in more accurate and realistic effects.

Lighting in the game looks incredibly realistic, thanks to accurate reflections of light from surrounding objects and surfaces. This is especially noticeable in outdoor scenes, where light from the sun or artificial light sources bounces off wet cobbled streets, glass buildings, and other surfaces.

Ray tracing . Has 4 parameters. The difference between "High" and "Ultra" is clearly visible in the reflections (less clear). On "Medium" settings, the nearest puddles are not transparent, it is interesting that a reflection appears on the radiator grille. Since there are many locations with puddles and wet asphalt in the game, the general changes are clearly visible. The texture of the metal is changing somewhere, especially visible on the Off parameter.

In the test of video cards, the default resolution is 1920x1080, other resolutions are added and removed manually. You can also remove and add any positions of video cards. Testing of the video memory consumed by the game was carried out by the  MSI Afterburner program. The results on video cards from AMD and NVIDIA at resolutions of  1920x1080, 2560x1440 and 3840x2160 with various anti-aliasing settings were taken as the indicator. By default, the graph displays the most up-to-date solutions. Other graphics cards are added and removed from the chart at the reader's request.

The test was conducted on the base configuration Core i 9 13900K with 32 GB DDR5 6400 MHz pre-installed memory. All used RAM was taken as an indicator. The RAM test on the entire system was carried out on various video cards without running extraneous applications (browsers, etc.).
