Bethesda's game, Starfield, has raised eyebrows for its performance on the powerful Xbox Series X, running at just 30 FPS. Digital Foundry set out to find out why.

The Digital Foundry team assembled a PC mimicking Xbox Series X specs to assess the game's performance across different resolutions.

1440p testing:

  • Akila City ranged between 40-50 FPS.
  • Some areas, like Neon, consistently stayed at 60 FPS, even during combat.

4K testing:

  • Akila City had FPS fluctuations between 30-40.
  • Most Starfield locales showed 30-40 FPS, with occasional dips.
  • Indoor settings could hit up to 60 FPS, though frame rate drops were still noted.

Based on the tests, Digital Foundry suggests that Starfield on Xbox Series X could potentially offer a 1440p mode at 40-60 FPS, but dips in busier areas should be expected.
