Warner Bros. Discovery has officially acknowledged that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, released after many years of development and delays, did not meet the company's expectations. CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels remarked during the company's latest earnings call that the game, one of their key video game releases in 2024, underperformed since its launch earlier in the quarter.
The year-on-year comparison is unfavorable for the company, especially following last year's success with Hogwarts Legacy, the #1 title of the year, not based on the live service model unlike the heavily GaaS-focused Suicide Squad. This outcome might prompt Warner Bros. Discovery to rethink their strategy towards pushing the live service model.
Critics and players have pointed out issues with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, noting its repetitive mission design, lack of meaningful live service elements, and an unenjoyable storyline. Despite the polished visuals, smooth traversal, combat, and witty dialogues, the overall gameplay experience has been described as tedious. The game's failure to deliver an engaging encounter with the Justice League, as promised in its title, has been particularly criticized.
