AMD Expands AI Accelerator Range with Potential Instinct MI388X Release

AMD's recent SEC filing revealed an unannounced AI accelerator, Instinct MI388X, hinting at an expansion in its AI product lineup. This disclosure in the financial report suggests an upcoming addition to AMD's AI accelerators, potentially positioning the MI388X as the highest-performing model to date.

The filing references AMD's existing AI GPUs, the Instinct MI250, MI300X, and MI300A, indicating a focus on these models. According to regulations set by the U.S. Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) in October 2023, products classified under ECCN 3A090 or 4A090 are subject to new export requirements, excluding shipments to China and certain other countries, making a China-compliant version of the MI388X unlikely.

While the specifications for the MI388X remain undisclosed, its naming suggests it could lead AMD's current offerings. This might be AMD's final iteration before transitioning to the new MI400 series by 2025. AMD has hinted at updated MI300 accelerators with increased HBM storage and the potential inclusion of faster HBM3e memory.
