AMD Unveils FSR 3.1, Enabling Cross-Platform Frame Generation with DLSS and XeSS

At GDC 2024, AMD announced the latest iteration of its FidelityFX Super Resolution technology, FSR 3.1, marking a significant upgrade since FSR 3's debut last year. FSR 3.1 introduces enhanced image quality and the ability to generate frames using other upscaling solutions, such as NVIDIA's DLSS and Intel's XeSS.

The new version decouples frame generation from FSR 3 upscaling, allowing users with DLSS or XeSS-supported GPUs to benefit from frame generation. This move signifies AMD's commitment to versatility and performance across different graphics platforms.

Improvements in FSR 3.1 include better temporal stability, which reduces flickering and "fizziness" around moving objects, and minimizes ghosting while preserving detail. Additionally, the updated FidelityFX API simplifies debugging for developers and ensures future compatibility with newer FSR versions, supporting Vulkan and Xbox Game Development Kit (GDK).

Developers can access FSR 3.1 on GPUOpen in the second quarter of 2024, with the technology expected to be integrated into up to 40 game titles later in the year. This update paves the way for a more seamless and high-quality gaming experience across a range of upscaling technologies.
