GPU Market Update: Laptops Lead the Charge as Desktops Hold Steady

The latest quarter of 2023 saw a significant rise in the computer graphics market, according to Jon Peddie Research. Shipments of GPUs, the hardware that powers everything from video games to professional design, increased by 6% reaching 76.2 million units. This growth was primarily driven by laptops, which continue to be in high demand, while desktop computer graphics remained stable.

Over the year, the total number of shipped GPUs grew by an impressive 24%, marking the most substantial increase in the past 25 years. With a steady annual growth rate of 3.6%, it is expected that by the end of 2026, there will be 5 billion GPUs in use worldwide, with 30% being discrete or standalone graphics cards.

In the specifics, laptop GPUs experienced a surge of 32% in shipments, contrasting with a slight 1% decline in desktop graphics cards. Market shares shifted slightly with Intel gaining a 2.8% increase, while AMD and NVIDIA saw small declines of 1.4% and 1.36%, respectively.

Overall, the GPU industry saw a 5.9% growth in shipments. Intel led the way with a significant 10.5% increase, while AMD and NVIDIA experienced decreases of 2.9% and 1.5%, respectively. Detailed figures for discrete graphics cards will be provided in the upcoming reports.

Additionally, the report highlighted that laptops continue to dominate the market with 69% of CPU shipments, compared to 31% for desktops. The combined market for PC GPUs and CPUs grew by 5.9%, a notable improvement over the ten-year average decline of 0.6%.

The report also noted a slight decrease in the overall GPU attachment rate (the rate at which GPUs are included in systems) by 3.3% from the last quarter. However, the market for desktop graphic cards (AIBs) saw an increase of 6.8% from the previous quarter, indicating continued interest in gaming and professional graphics workstations.
