Capcom Unveils the Future of RE Engine with REX Engine Development

Capcom is steering towards a new horizon in gaming technology by cultivating the next iteration of its famed RE Engine, now dubbed the REX Engine (RE Next Engine). Although specifics remain under wraps, the company aims to infuse cutting-edge technologies like Mesh Shaders from DirectX 12 Ultimate and the Visibility Buffer feature, eliminating the need for double vertex processing. This move marks Capcom's intent to foster a high degree of customization for diverse game genres and handle large asset volumes, setting a new benchmark in rendering efficiency and gameplay experience.

RE2023 RE ENGINE

The RE Engine has been a cornerstone of Capcom's resurgence since the launch of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard in early 2017, which was the first game developed on this engine. The success trail continued with most of the subsequent releases, except for Monster Hunter World, which was based on the older MT Framework. These successes not only led to record sales but also catapulted Capcom's stock value, underscoring the engine's impact.

The journey commenced in April 2014 with the development of the RE Engine and has reached a pivotal juncture with the REX Engine, as revealed in a series of videos on Capcom R&D's YouTube channel. By advancing its proprietary engine, Capcom is not just enhancing its gaming tech arsenal but is also prepping for the collaborative ventures with overseas contractors requiring robust documentation, samples, and localization efforts.
