Prominent game developer CD Projekt RED, known for titles like The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, has announced its transition to Unreal Engine 5, leaving behind their proprietary REDengine that powered their previous projects.

Their latest project on REDengine was Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty. This move has stirred interest and raised questions among fans who are concerned that the switch to a new engine might mean discarding accumulated experience and assets.

The Game Director of Cyberpunk 2077 reassured the community that the transition to Unreal Engine 5 does not mean starting from scratch. Similarities between the engines will allow them to leverage their experience from working with REDengine. Additionally, CD Projekt RED has revealed a partnership with Epic Games to create their own tailored version of Unreal Engine 5, customized to meet their needs.

The first CD Projekt RED game to be developed on the new engine will be the next installment in The Witcher series.
